Disliked the cost of getting from one place to another but discovered that if we walked to the main road we could get a much cheaper shuttle!

Great beach, waves controlled by a reef. Trouble getting a beach chair. It was busy but if you go further back there are pools with the ocean view that had more room

We arrived around 10am last week to Akumal from Playa (about 30 min drive). I had heard that the beach could get very crowded so we wanted to get there a bit early. While there were definitely people there, there was plenty of space under the trees for shade. We parked in the pay parking lot (20 pesos per hour) right past the arches to the beach. It's a rental and I'm a bit paranoid so wanted to do that. There is free parking right before the arch (you have to tip a few pesos for someone to watch your car) as well. We went right up to Akumal Dive Center and rented full snorkel gear (mask, fins, snorkel and lifejacket for $18/person/per day). I believe the man at the front told me that the lifejacket was mandatory. We also got a locker from them and it was nice to be able to not worry about your stuff. We spent an hour or so snorkeling around (we saw several turtles). We saw several small tour groups out and I don't think they saw anything different than we did. Do be careful, there's a lot of boats coming in and out and you need to just be aware of where they are (look up once in a while!). We had packed a lunch and ate it on the beach, although there were several places to buy food very close by. We hopped back into Akumal Dive Center and showered and dried off (very handy and nice to have a shower!) Because we didn't need to return the gear until 4:30pm, we took all the stuff to our private Cenote tour (Cenote Santa Cruz) and came back around 2:30pm to return them. I never saw the beach looked too full - maybe we were there on an "off week" or maybe people's conception of "crowded" is a bit different than ours. Being from NJ, some of the beaches at Shore can literally be packed with people to the point where you can't almost see the sand. I never saw it like that - there were definitely people there, but it didn't feel crowded at all. We were on a bit of schedule that day, but if we weren't, I think I would have spent another hour snorkeling around when we returned our stuff in the afternoon.

Great area lots of things to do and see. Turtles around year round use bran cereal pellets to attract the fish without attracting the birds.
