“Turtles in the summer”

During the summer the turtles come back to Akumal to lay their eggs, so it´s very easy to find them swimming very close to the shore. In the sea, there´s grass on the sand, so the turtles stay there to it this grass. It´s a priceless experience, and free if you´ve got your snorkel or even your swimming glasses! Even my 4 year-old daughter was able to swim from the sand to where the turtles were. And we even saw a couple of stingrays! Just fantatisc! A must-see experience.

Water was warm. The activities were fun.
Only thing is that people reserve the parasols, so get there early.

We took the local bus from Playa del Carmen for 35 pesos to Akumal. We were let off at the highway and was told to walk to the top and then turn right for the turtles or left for the lagoon, turtles it was. The beach was very pretty, white sand and clean. It was a nice mix of locals and vacationers of all ages. We had our own snorkel equipment and so we put it on and asked "How do we find the turtles?" With a wide sweep of a local's arm he gestured to the water in front of us. We still didn't know where to go so we just swam a little out and there they were! The whole area was turtles! We also saw rays and assorted fish and more turtles and then turtles. There were turtles up to five feet and small baby turtles. This was a beautiful and amazing experience nothing over done as a tour experience often is. This was amazing snorkeling. After, we had lunch on the beach at a little restaurant and spoke with some American Ex-Pats who spend their retirement counting and tagging turtles and marking egg spots. Everyone was super friendly and wonderful! When were were walking back to the highway to catch the bus the driver spotted us and came up hill to pick us up. 35 pesos and we were back partying in Playa del Carmen. What an amazing experience!!!!

We went here in a group of 4 with two not so great swimmers and no equipment, for a very reasonable price we hired gear and we got taken out but a local guide and shown all of the coral widlife and most importantly loads of turles in their natural enviroment - what amazing creatures! If you have your own mask snorkel and fins by all means take them and just look for little groups of people and you will see turtles etc easy enough with no costs.

The beach itself is a very nice beach too, wouldnt say as nice as playa paridiso in tulum but not far off it! Would certainly tell anyone to visit this place! great pizzas on the beach too!!
