“Very Nice Very Relaxing,”
Reviewed December 5, 2013

We stayed for 4 days/nights. The resort is beautiful and well kept.
The upsides:
1. all adults (no kids) - Thank you!
2. Really wonderful food in the buffet. the custom cooked eggs, fresh churros and mini-doughnuts were a hit. I even felt brave enough to eat a sashimi sushi. Buffet had a very nice variety of foods and desserts. Would suggest a larger selection of Mexican foods.
2a. Loved the barbeque grill buffet at Hotel Tulum beach.
3. Very, very nice staff. Monica Juarez in the Hospitality department was particularly helpful in arranging a change to an airport shuttle schedule, even though we made the request close to her quitting time on a Saturday.
4. White sand beach with the 'sand bar' was fabulous - it doesn't get any better than Riviera Maya
5. The little shops at the Tulum hacienda were pretty cool.
6. Reasonably reliable service by the shuttles
7. The nightly entertainment was pretty good!

Downsides - and these are minor:
1. Not enough beach towels available around 7:30 am - 8:00 am. Gotta get to the beach early to get chairs under the shade.
2. Hotel is not located on the beach side of the road, although there are frequent shuttles, they did get a bit crowded.
3. I'm sure this is climate related, but the humidity in the room, especially after a shower, never dissipated enough to have really dry towels (we reused them anyways).
4. Our room had a mildewy kind of smell, also climate related.

I would love to come back and stay again. It's likely we would prefer to stay at one of the other Bahia properties so we can be on the beach.

First of all we would like to thank your for staying with us and for taking time to share your experience regarding your stay at Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an. We are glad to hear you had a good time during your stay and that you liked the only adults concept, the buffet, shuttle service and entertainment

Thank you very much for bringing to our attention the lack of towels and the humidity in your room, we will definitely share your feedback with our team and rest assured we will continuously strive for excellence.

We are sorry to hear that the fact that we are not by the beach was not what you expected, however I invite you to visit any of our sister hotels for your future vacation; I am sure you will have a pleasant stay close to the beach.

We visited Sian Kaan 10-20 November 2013 for a special birthday for my husband. We are pleased we chose this resort since it was adults only and gave us ala carte options for our complete stay (we booked all our tables before the holiday through our Virgin rep). The rooms are modern and of a high standard (we unfortunately had a puddle by the patio doors all holiday so we kept putting beach towels down but not before a golf bag was soaked during our first night! Room 3222).

The food options were very good, especially the breakfasts and our personal favourite was Mako (Japanese) and we preferred the Alux gourmet (both at SK!). However, we had better food on our previous visit to Mexico.

We chose this hotel for the golf and the course was lovely with some challenging holes for all golfers! However, be aware that Americans seem to have preferential treatment for reserving the more favourable tee times, despite every effort made by us to book these both months and weeks before departure. All the staff at the golf club were friendly and helpful and on arrival would retrieve our clubs for “Mr Roger”! It was really useful being able to store them in their secure lock-up.

We travelled with Virgin and Grant was very helpful during our stay, especially as 115 cases were removed from our outward bound flight, which included one of ours – which was tampered with and which we are now having to deal with - in all that it entails …

One thing we found a bit annoying was when we requested details of the bikes - you could only "hire" for 1 hour - and we had asked because it was again raining and we wanted something different to do as all bars and seating areas were full due to the weather, but were unable to as bikes are note hired our when it rains!!!!! Also, on a site this large, we would suggest 1 hour is too short a period to explore.

However, if you choose this hotel, you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: We requested a quiet room and were positioned near the Suishi bar and pool and it was quiet and fair...

I must write about the staff at this particular resort. They are all so wonderful, very friendly, and kind. It was a pleasure dining at the buffet at Sian Ka'an especially when we were waited on by Cinthia Canul and Faustino. The made sure our dining experienced was enjoyable. They would reserve our favorite table for us and from time to time they surprised us with exclusive drinks (they were so yum!). They always promptly cleared our table off with dirty dishes and our drinks were always refilled. They deserve to be recognized! so this review is for them!

Myself: 45 years old Travel agent. We travel 2-3X a year to the RM since it is a short 4hr-direct flight and we love the RM, for everything it has to offer!

We chose this resort b/c it was on a golf course and we wanted to play golf. Since it was so inexpensive, I was not expecting much, but after reading the reviews, my hopes were a bit high…

Don't get me wrong, this resort is perfect for what it is: a golf resort!! right across the street from one of the best golf course we've played in the RM
the food is very good, I had pre-booked my à la carte restaurant before leaving home, and we liked all of them except for the Grand Tortuga, which was sincerely horrible!!
The staff at the buffet over breakfast and lunch are super nice ( special mentions to Hugo, Luis and Miriam) they are always in a good mood and will cater to your every needs.

Now, where I am very disappointed,

Wifi……. you get it free for 24hrs, then you have to wait another 24hrs before you can log on again. You can do FB on this "basic" plan but you can't get to your emails…. I saw there is free Wifi in the lobby but neither my husband or myself could log on….
Guys, this is (almost) 2014….. charge 30$ more per person and get everybody into cyber space!!!!

Beach….. you get there, and NO CHAIRS!!!!! we had to stay in the Tulum section to get a decent spot. The Sian Ka'an section is full by 9h00am, and when I say FULL I mean it!!! people are on top of one another and you get those horrible 1980's plastic chairs (luxury???)

Beach/pool towels….. by noon, good luck finding a beach towel…. again, luxury?

Turn down service…. none

Pool service, beach service…. in the Tulum section (where we had to stay since we could never get a spot in the Sian Ka'an section) we had beach service once during the whole week, same goes for pool service, once we were asked if we cared for something to drink

Gym……. well I think this was our biggest let down. The gym is part of a residential community. It is located approx 2.5km away from the resort (!!!!!!!!!!) we decided to jog over there, since the shuttle to get there was not coming, we ended up always getting there before the shuttle anyways. Once you get there…. well, how can I say this…. 2 bikes ( not spinning bikes, old people's bike) 2 treadmills and 1 elliptical. free weights and 1 bench, 1 tower and 1 rowing machine. All of this into an aquarium 8 feet by 50. Luxury????

Don't pay for a garden jacuzzi, it's not worth it. Since the resort is in a tropical forest, the jacuzzi is in the shade most of the time. Get the standard room, we were never in there anyways.

Overall we had a great time, we paid 1200$ and I would not pay 1$ more. We had great golf and I would recommend it to golfers but not to beach fans or anybody looking to get pampered or treated with "luxury" because this place is far from being "luxurious"…..

Room Tip: get the basic room, jacuzzi is not worth it

We stayed at the Sian Kaan for 4 nights over Thanksgiving weekend with 3 other members of our family.

ROOMS: We reserved a penthouse suite and were given one in Villa #17. (Our other family members stayed in Villas #16 and #18.) Overall the rooms were nice although the building conditions were not as pristine as we had expected from the pictures. The penthouse suite was spacious and the rooftop deck was nice although we did not use the jacuzzi as it did not look very clean. We were glad to have stayed in our villa as it was far from all the noise and had a great view of the sunset from our roofdeck. We did have some trouble with our room in that the electricity went out twice during our 4 nights. One of the other rooms did not get hot water until the very last night. They were unwilling to do anything for them (change rooms etc), which was disappointing. The grounds are absolutely beautiful.

FOOD: Overall, we were satisfied with the food but the reservation system left much to be desired. We reserved 3 nights before getting to the resort but the nights were incorrectly reserved by the hotel. It was impossible to get any reservations once we got to the resort. The other problem is that waiting to talk to the concierge to make any changes to the reservations was a horror. Every time we tried to talk to the concierge (for food or any sights), we had to wait 30 minutes. Overall, the time spent to sort out the restaurants amounted to 2 hours. As for the food, the a la carte restaurants at Sian Kaan (Maiko and Alux) were good although not spectacular. The buffets were very good and the drinks at the bar were very good as well. The only miss was the Mediteraneo on the Coba resort which we did not enjoy at all. While food was generally good, we found the service to be lacking at times. Many times, after waiting quite a few minutes, we had to flag down waiters to get water or drinks, especially at the buffet and the bar. We had a very bad experience with the manager at Don Pablo (which we did not end up eating at).

BEACH, POOL: While the beach and pool were nice, the lack of lounge chairs was a real inconvenience. Due to the paucity of the chairs, people would go out at 8am or earlier to reserve the chairs and keep them the whole day. We found it better in some of the other resorts so ended up going to the other resorts pools and beaches but it was an inconvenience that we had to go to other areas. The pools in Sian Kaan were good for lounging but not good for swimming as they were very small. The beach area reserved for Sian Kaan is very small and very crowded.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: We tried to take advantage of the gym and golfing but came across some barriers. The gym is very far (20 minute walk) and the trolley does not run frequently and was full on a couple occasions. The gym itself was nice but was open for limited hours. Officially, it closed at 6pm or so but on 2 of the days that we were there, they closed early or closed during the day. There were no announcements anywhere so we wasted more than 30 minutes going to the closed gym. As for golf, they advertise that they had no green fees but they charge $65 per person for the cart use which is mandatory and $45 for clubs. Felt like false advertisement to me. Jet ski rental was $70 (or $75?) for 30 minutes, which we thought was really steep. Also, the free internet was useless and you had to purchase the upgraded internet to get any usable connection. Due to the last few points, we felt like they were nickel and diming you to a certain extent.

PROS
- Nice rooms
- Good food
- nice facilities
CONS
- Service
- Wait times for the concierge
- Lack of lounge chairs
- Not free service for things that were advertised as free

I would like to make a heartfelt apology that your stay was not up to your expectations. Our team works very hard to ensure our facilities and services are superior and strive to be the best hotel around.

We are very concerned to learn about your disappointing. Some of the problems you mentioned are totally under our standards and we have already taken action in order to meet our values again. Regarding the restaurant reservations I would like to inform you as I told you by email that we always try to accommodate your dinners as your wishes but it also depends on the restaurants availability, I am really sorry that the service I provided prior to your arrival was not what you expected. About golf, the hotel has an arrangement with an external company, Riviera Maya Golf Club; our customers do not have to pay the green fee however there are fees that you have to pay and the hotel is not involved with those rates.

We thank you for offer us the opportunity to learn from your experience through your comments shared, these will be forward to our management.

This is our 3rd visit to Sian Ka'an and think the staff is fabulous, especially the waiters and waitresses in the main lobby and adjoining restaurant.

I would especially like to single out Eglayde, Emma and Demetrio who were exceedingly friendly and competent. They are extremely competent, friendly, and always looking to make sure the travelers--us!--were taken care of in a very professional manner. Gracias!

Btw, though I am not a fan of all-inclusive anything, the food was quite good, and again, the staff was excellent.

That said, I echo the other reviewer re the entertainment. The hotel seems to not know the market very well. It just reinforced my desire never to go on a cruise, as my wife and others have told me that the "entertainment " reminded them of same while being stuck on a cruise ship. Please: just provide us with music to dance by and eliminate the bingo and dancers.

I'm staying in the hotel and have to listen to some idiots setting up a soundsystem playing the worst dancing music or offer bingo using loudspeakers. Most of the people around the pool pack their stuff and leave the place. The hotel doesnt understand that the guests are not party people.they try to relax, read a book or take a nap.same happends at the beach. It's a really nice place. Excellent food nice rooms but the entertainment is pure terror.
