I want to write a balanced review of Sian Ka'an. The positive first.

First, the property is impeccable. It is extremely well maintained and you can tell the effort taken to provide a first class experience.

There are 4 pools on the property each as lovely as the other. The gounds are lovely. The entry is inviting and beautiful.

The room we had was on a back villa which meant limited pool view but it was really lovely, spacious and Pedro did an outstanding job every day of cleaning. We had a balcony. There is a small sitting area with table and chairs and the bar was stocked everyday. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and the bathroom very good.

It is easy to walk around and there are numerous dining options from a 24 hour snack bar, buffet, Alux and Japanese. In addition guests of Sian Ka'an can eat at any of the 3 other resorts - Coba, Tulum and Acumel. We ate at Le Gourmet at one of the other resorts and the food was very good as was the service. The desserts was outstanding!

The buffet at Sian Kaan is well above average. There are many options and a huge variety. We fund the food to be on the low side of warm. It was really never hot. And that would be the only drawback. There is seafood, meat, vegetarian, chinese, japanese, italian - it would be difficult to fault the buffet given how many people they serve. The hours are also very generous and every meal has 3-4 hours of serving. You can have bar service.

The real plus of the buffet is the staff. They are simply exceptional - Jhonathan, Faustino, Bianca, Pablo - everyone we encountered went out of their way to be friendly and helpful and the service was top notch.

The Japanese restaurant is not as good. The sushi passed but was nothing special and the main courses were avaerage as was dessert. We did enjoy Pablo our server. The room is lovely but the food just average.

We went to Alux twice. The service is excellent. Victor and Whilbur were fabulous. One night was our anniversary and they made a superb cake. The lamb is outstanding! The shrimp was bad one night but excellent the second night. The room overlooking a pool is lovely.

The snack bar is open 24 hours and has a good variety for in between times. It overlooks a pool and the service is good while the food is average to good.

The lobby bar is a great gathering spot and is adjacent to an outdoor lounge. There is entertainment throughout the day and evening. They tend to serve cheaper brands of alcohol. The staff all of them are excellent - we especially enjoyed Gabrielle who was outstanding.

The gift shop. While the stock is limited the prices are excellent. I would buy there instead of elsewhere just on prices. Though you may not find what you want as it is limited. The liquor store is very expensive and duty free is the way to go.

Now a few negatives.

The resort is not on the beach. We knew this going. You need to take a cart over to the other three properties. It takes 10 minutes and is fairly regular. We thought we wouldn't mind but really this kind of vacation is about the beach and seeing the ocean so we felt a bit removed. The beach is not the greatest and you can tell it was impacted by the huricane. You can access it from any of the other 3 resorts and Sian Ka'an does have its own area. I think we would just prefer a beach option in the future.

The biggest NEGATIVE is treatment of staff. We were very aware that management was ALWAYS on watch. They were everywhere and not friendly. They were rude to and beyond nasty. You simply do not need to tell your staff a tablecloth is an inch short on one side in front of customers. You also do not need to scold about removing an odd cup here or there. In Canada/US managers would pick up the cup and make sure it was attended to. We found the treatment of staff by management to be be bothersome and we really felt bad. We also know staff is paid $5 per day NOT per hour per day. Managers are brought in from Spain and Cuba and Mexicans are kept as line workers. They rely on tips to supplement wages and this is simply not fair in North America. Mexico needs a minimum wage and unless vacationers bring this to the forefront it will go unnoticed. We provided $5 minmimun per day to each of housekeeping, breakfast, lunch and dinner servers which still only totalled $20 per day. Please be cognizant of the low wages these resorts provide and give workers the same tips we would at home. They work hard, long hours, and deserve better. I hope managment at Sian Ka'an will take note and recognize their workers are what provides the special moments and memories from a vacation. If every other resort stays the same Bahia Principe could be a leader in change.

We also felt there was little culture at Sian Ka'an. It is so perfect and void of Mexico it really was just a place. Lovely as it was, it could have been in Jamaica, Hawaii, Trinidad or Fiji. We would have liked more Mexican flavour.

I want to give Sian Ka'an a 4.5. As resorts go it is really well above average and bordering on excellent. However we also know staff needs to be paid more and the Mexican people are an important component of all-inclusives. We hope people tip generously to these wonderful people. But that shouldn't excuse Bahia Principe from their duty of a fair wage.

Room Tip: a front villa offers views, a back villa peace

Overall we had a great time! We were there from February 1-8, weather was hot! The buffet was great ! The snack bar was very good-Try the cheese fingers they were good. The Japanese restaurant was very good, the Alux was okay but we enjoyed the Japanese restaurant more. We did visit some other restaurants tequila in tulum and le gourmet in coba they were okay, but we found the food at the sian ka'an was the best.

Just returned from this beautiful hotel for a second time. Lovely grounds, great staff, big rooms and many food venues. I would like to commend Elizbeth (public relations), Gabriel (waiter breakfast/lunch at the Gran Tortuga), Ruddy (bartender at Coba Music Bar), Vanessa and Christian.
I realize this is not on the beach but there is soooo much to love about it.

We just returned from a 7 day stay at the Sian Kaan. We have stayed at over 40 all inclusives all over the carribean. Sian has the best food and service of any of the resorts. Special thanks to Brisa, who we emailed prior to our departure about a medical condition my husband has, and the beautiful well located room she chose for us. All the staff are friendly and want you to have a good time.. We dined three times at the Alux restaurant because the food was so good and beautifully presented. We will definately return to this hotel.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are good.

We were looking for a quiet, relaxing place we could really rest. We found it!

Comments on tripadvisor are true. Cleanliness, professionalism of staff, buffet impeccable, service cart to the beach almost no waiting. Restaurants in Sian Ka'an are higher than other restaurants (Tulum, Akumal and Coba). I agreed with tiloupmontreal (feb 7, 2013).

Room: We had room 3323. Extremely quiet, what we wanted! five minutes walk from the lobby

Restaurant :I used the restaurant booking service via the email address on their website. Thank you, Brisa for its effectiveness reservation, we had a different restaurant every night of our stay.

The Sian Ka'an is very quiet. The age of the couples ranged from 20 to 70 years. If you want a place to sleep during the day at the pool, go to the sushi bar pool (pool villas 27-36). If you want a little activity, go to the snack bar Cenote (pool villas 24, 25, 26, 14, 12 and 11). If you would like more acitivity and partying, go to the Coba, Tulum and Akulam Hotel. It's great to have access to multiple location. You can choose what ever your mood.

Gym (Tao Wellness): a place to discover! A very small gym, two treadmills, two bikes, one elliptical. Two pools for length, a few yoga classes, zumba, ... The place is worth the trip for your eyes. The only negative point, is the small places for bodybuilding and cardiovascular exercices. In this place, 5 people is a crowd !

The ruins of Tulum: we were two couples, we chose not to take the tour agency or hotel.
For $ 70 USD, it is possible to take a taxi for the day towards the ruins of Tulum. Paco, our driver took us to the ruins, he waited for our return (two hours), to bring us to a lovely restaurant on the beach. We enjoyed the beach and a meal until 16h. Paco waiting to take us back, to our hotel. The cost of entrance to the ruins of Tulum is $ 6 usd per person. The cost of a taxi for a full day (10am to 4pm) is about $ 70 usd. Total cost for 4 people, $ 94 usd plus a tip.It was possible to obtain better price if you leave the hotel and you asked for a taxi near the road.

We paid 1550$ for a week. I would not paid more than 2000$

Room Tip: Room at the Sushi pool are very quiet, day and night. (villa 27 to 36).

Sian Ka'an is one of four properties in the complex, and the only one located across the highway from the other three and the beach area. Trams run frequently all day, and while as other have mentioned the wait is never very long, by the last few days they do become bothersome as they are really the only way to access the beach areas and the majority of the restaurants at the 3 other hotels. The setting is beautiful, and the staff very efficient and courtious. We stayed for a week in late December and orginally booked a mid-priced room however upon check-in we found the room a little cramped and inquired to upgrade to the penthouse suite which has a private roof patio with a jacuzzi tub. The extra cost is truly worthwhile and vastly improved our vacation.

Guests of Sian Ka'an have exclusive access to a very nice section of the beach with comfortable lounges and palapas. You will receive great service from the beach bar, and the waitresses will come to you with your drink orders, an even bring glasses of ice water (completely safe to drink) or fruit kabobs when the come by ... be sure to tip your waitresses as they truly provide fantastic, friendly, unobtrusive service
