“Excellent Vacation, Worth the Upgrade”
Reviewed May 1, 2009

We stayed at the Royal Suites from Apr 19-26, 2009 with my gf and her family. Ages ranged from 19-50. I will start by saying that had the Royal Suites not been on the same compound as the Palladium, you would swear it was a completely different hotel. Had I stayed on the Palladium side, my review may have not been as positive, however I would have also expected much less as the price was less than 2/3 to stay there.

GENERAL INFO: As a Royal Suites guest, you have access to a private lobby, bar, pool, restaurant and beach area. You can go to any part of the resort and use the facilities but Palladium guests are not allowed in to the Royal Suites portion of the compound. The resort itself is very large and much walking is required to get to certain attractions. NO paths are direct and many are up hill. Not recommended for people with difficulties walking.

CHECK-IN: If you are a Royal Suites guest, you check in in a seperate lobby and there is almost no wait. Sometimes the bellboys get confused and send you to the wrong place. DO NOT wait in line at the main lobby to check in if you are a Royal Suites guest.

ROOMS: As this building was finished winter 2007, the rooms are very nice and extremely up to date. You have a choice of a king bed or two doubles and an enclosed or open concept bathroom. Bathrooms have a jacuzzi tub, standup shower, toilet and single sink. Open bathrooms have the shower and toilet behind glass doors. All rooms are air conditioned and it appears to work most of the time. Rooms also include a loveseat, desk and table. All units have balconies and your choice of views are either into the resort or into the jungle. All rooms have a Sony 32" LCD TV, a DVD player and an iPod docking station along with the usual: iron, board, hairdryer. There is an electronic safe that is ample size for a 15" laptop plus cameras and all your money/documents. The entire Suites side has free Wi-Fi internet access.

GROUNDS: Everything is beautiful on this resort and a lot of time and care is taken maintaining the property. The grounds include a botanical garden and a zoo with: deer, spider monkeys, parrots, turtles, ducks, rabbits, etc. As well as two aligators that live at the front entrance. You are situated up a hill from the ocean so many parts of the resort have fantastic views.

POOLS: The resort has three seperate pools, one of which is private to Royal Suites guests. This pool is very peaceful and tranquil. A great place to come back to and relax or drink all day! The second pool is the family pool. All ages are welcome here and it gets very busy during the day as the activities are held here. Loud music throughout the day. The third pool is the infinity pool. This pool is 18+. It has a spectacular view of the ocean. This pool can get quite busy and rowdy as it is a popular location for suntanners and drinkers alike. Both Royal Suites pool and the infinity pool are open until midnight.

BEACH: The beaches are very typical of the west coast. The water is decent but not crystal clear blue like on the east. Sand has been trucked in, but is white and cleaned often. Many loungers are on the beach both in direct sunlight and under palapas. Honestly, the quality of beach was higher on the Palladium side. However, this beach got very busy during the day. The Royal Suites beach was not as nice, but offered more relaxation and a better selection of chairs. Posistioned between the beach and the pool, on the Royal Suites side, are plenty of bali beds that you can nap on day or night.

RESTAURANTS: The Royal Suites restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each meal has a menu you order off of as well as a salad bar. The food here was excellent and if you didn't want to venture far, you could easily eat all of your meals at this restaurant. There are three a la carte restaurants: Italian, Mexican and Asian. The Italian was probably the best presentation. All served good food and liking it is personal preference. 2-3 times a week they hold a beach BBQ. All types of meat are cooked over an open fire and served on the beach. This is a great setting for eating dinner and the food was beyond exceptional! There is a buffet open 3 times per day with average food and little rotation from day to day. There is a snack bar open 10-6pm near the family pool. Food is beyond terrible. Avoid this restaurant.

BARS: The private bar in the Royal Suites is great. There is almost never a wait and they offer many custom mixed drinks. There is a fair selection of international liquors and Corona beer on tap. I cannot offer much information about the rest of the bars as I did not frequent them. This is mainly because each time I did, there were significant waits for my drink; even something simple like a beer. There is a bar in each lobby, one at the adult pool, one on the beach and two in the main resort area near the theater.

ENTERTAINMENT: There are activities all day at the family pool: dancing, bingo, competitions, sports, etc. I cannot comment on the quality as I did not participate. There are nightly shows in the theater. Of the two I saw, I would not recommend them. Poorly done and often made no sense.

TRAVEL: This hotel is NOT IN PEURTO VALLARTA as advertised. It is north in a different state called Punta de Mita. This is not the best resort to stay at if you like doing many excursions or plan on going to town to shop everyday. Peurto Vallarta proper is over 45 mins away. $1.50 by bus or $35USD by Taxi each way. The closet town, Bucerias, is small and dirty. Not as good shopping experience as the boardwalk in PV. In addition, you must pay extra transportation costs for many of the excursions because the hotel is so far away from the meeting points.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you think I left anything out.

NIce place. In my opinion another $150 or so person is well worth the upgrade to royal suites - just watch for the price to come down, occupancy was about 20%. There are cheap buses to the towns no problems getting around. No alcohol in the drinks it's almost like you have to beg to get any, even with tips of 20-50 pesos - this bothered me. Other service was mostly good though. Bed was hard for my liking. Decent wireless internet in RS but I did notice a couple people from the "other side" lurking near the fence with their laptops so that might work for you too. For those of you looking for something to do around 4:20 check under the 42nd rock on the lobby side of the gravel path that runs behind the royal suites lobby. Hope you enjoy your time at this decent resort.

We just returned from the Royal Suites Punta Mita by Palladium, and if you have a week and you need to relax, this is the place. We had searched Trip Advisor for weeks looking for a place to go, and when we stumbled upon the Royal Suites, we were hooked. We read all the reviews, and you really do need to read with a grain of salt.

If you are looking for a party vacation, go elsewhere, or stay on the Palladium side.

If you are looking for a little oasis from the grind of reality this is the place to go. My wife and I are in our early thirties, but were not looking for a place with great night clubs. We were looking to relax, and recharge. The Royal Suites makes that happen. Don't get me wrong though, the Royal Suites can be fun at the same time, it just matters what you make of it. We saw several people who kept to themselves and that is fine. We made several great friends, which makes the experience much better.

The resort itself is completely self-contained. That black armband means luxury with benefits. I will break it up into categories:

Food:
There are several restaurants at the resort, and one specifically for Royal Suites guests. The Royal Suites restaurant mixed up the menu every couple of days, and you could easily eat something different every day. Alfredo will make sure you receive good service, and Miguel and Carlos are fantastic waiters. Don't forget to help yourself to the soft serve ice cream cones as well! The salad bar was always good, and we thoroughly enjoyed not lining up for anything.

Over the course of the week, we ate Rib Eye, Mahi-Mahi, T-Bone, Chicken, Fajitas, and much more. The 24-hour room service offers a bit of everything, and you can literally expect your food within 20 minutes.

As for the other restaurants, just make a reservation with the concierge, and you are set. I can't stress this enough... no lineups! Of the other restaurants at the Palladium, we had great meals at Viva Mexico, Portifino, but were not overly impressed with the Japanese restaurant Bamboo. The food was indistinguishable on the plate, and not that good. One thing you absolutely have to get is a Flaming Mexican coffee. They serve them table side at all the restaurants. They are fantastic!

Rooms:
We were amazed at how nice the rooms are. Marble floors, couch, table and chairs, king size bed, nice patio... only complaint were the beds.. they are hard as rocks.. Next time we go, we are buying a mattress pad or one of those eggshell mattresses and buying the vaccum sealed bags at walmart and sticking it in the suitcase. They have a pillow menu that you can choose from 4-5 different type of pillows.. be sure to do this on your first day. The jacuzzi tub is wonderful and large. We stayed in room 5213, next to the oceanside suite. The buildings are three storey, and we were on the top floor. Be sure to leave a tip, or some gifts from the dollar store on your bed every day.

Grounds/Service:
The grounds are immaculately kept, and the service was fantastic. It is winter in PVR now, so some of the palm trees are a bit in need of water, but its just that time of year. The pools are great, the infinity pool runs into another pool, and they both overlook the ocean. There is more than enough seating, and cover for all the guests and we never had trouble finding a spot of our choice. The pool level features the bar, with full waiter service to the pool. Ricardo is the best waiter, and he will get you anything you need or want! He is fantastic. Juan Carlos is the best bartender, and can make anything you want. I highly recommend that you ask for his green shooters, or as they are called now, Mozee's.

The pool level leads down to the sun beds, which have sheets to block some sun if you want. This is also where the massage table is. There is no charge for the beds, and there is always one free. This level leads down to the beach level. The beach is nice, a bit rocky, but we knew in advance that we were not going to white sand and coral reef. There are sunbeds, and lots of shade. Next to the private beach is what is dubbed as "the chicken pool". This is the salt water pool for those who dont want to swim in the actual ocean. The waves fill this pool, and there are small fish in there. It is quite nice, and a great addition.

Amenities:
The rooms also had flat screen Sony tvs, and the connections are not blocked like they are here in Canada. Bring a laptop that can hook up to a tv, or a portable dvd player or ipod with tv cable and hook up. Camcorders also hook up. There is wifi in the main lobby, as well as free computers to use. There is also free wifi by the pool bar. The free internet in the rooms is via an ethernet cable, so if you are a mac user, bring an Airport Express and wifi your room. The safe is big enough to fit a 13 or 15 inch laptop, so feel free to bring this as well. We fit our Digital SLR, two iPhones, wallets, credit cards, and had room to spare. We didn't bring our laptops because we didnt think they would fit, but they would have for sure.

Tips:
Be sure to leave tips for the bellboy and staff. These people make 50 pecos a day.. yes, a day, which is equivalent to 5 dollars. They basically work for tips, and they deserve them. Think of what you tip at home, and be sure to tip well. All inclusive means your food and drinks are free.. so please don't be cheap. A 5 dollar tip is more than they make in a day. We tipped well, for drink service, food service, room service, the maids and the bellboys. Trust me, if you tip a total of $100 bucks while you are there, its not going to hurt your pocket, but it will probably feed a lot of the staffs kids and help them survive.

Overall:
This is a great resort for all ages, couples and singles. This is not a party resort. I have posted a video as well, with scenes from the Royal Suites area. Take a look.

Have fun!

My husband and I have stayed at the Palladium Royal Suites in Punta Cana, the Mayan Riviera and, from Jan 16 - 23, the Riviera Nayarit (Punta Mita). They all have aspects that make them wonderful!

What made the Royal Suites Punta Mita wonderful was the service and the seclusion.

We had the opportunity to eat al la carte breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the restaurant designated for Royal Suites (RS) guests only - and, except for a few meals in the other part of the resort, we did just that.

No reservations are required for the RS restaurant and as a RS guest you receive front-of-the-line reservations for the other restaurants on the resort (Mexican, Mediterranean, Beach BBQ, Tex Mex and Oriental). You can make those reservations easily through the RS concierge located in the lobby.

The open air and the ocean view at the RS restaurant are spectacular. Nothing like watching whales jump while you enjoy a premium beverage and fabulous meal. The food was outstanding, with a large enough variety to keep us happy all week. (I am still craving the luscious shrimp burritos.) The breakfast and dinner menu remain the same and the lunch menu varies all week. There is always something for the tame and for the adventurous.

The service by Alfredo and his crew was second to none. All the servers were friendly, funny and engaging. They had no problem with special requests. Thank you to all of them. Plus, we never had to wait for a clean table. They ran the restaurant very professionally.

The service from the front desk/concierge to the bartenders/pool waiters was also great. Their smiles and indulgence of our poor Spanish helped to make our vacation memorable.

We also loved how relatively small the RS section was. Because we all stayed around the same (heated!) pool we got to know several other couples over the week. This is definitely a couples-oriented resort.

The RS pool is open until midnight and the pool bar is open until 1 a.m. The music throughout the day/evening is very quiet and relaxing - perfect for our needs.

Without a doubt, we felt the most spoiled by the beach beds in the "solarium." Even at noon we could find a bed overlooking the ocean. If you want to spend the day napping, reading, watching pelican/whales, enjoying the ocean breeze and beach drink service - this is the place for you!

My wife and I stayed in the Suites, in response to comments from other vacationers. This was good advice and I would highly recommend paying the extra for the suites. No kids there! Your own restaurant, and while the menu was limited, the quality of the food and the service were second to none. The restaurant is "open air" overlooking the beach and the ocean. The sunsets viewed from the restaurant are superb.
You have a private pool for Suites residents. We were in the building closest to the disco, on the side closest to the disco, so the noise in the evening was hard to take. We requested a different room, and were given one on the other side of the building. Problem solved. One thing to note: on the "less noisy" side, you don't get the morning sun. Which is to be considered in December, even in Mexico.
The staff are very friendly and very anxious to please.
I took the local bus into Bucerias one day, and Punta de Mita another. Both places are very interesting and entertaining, as was the bus ride itself. 10 pesos to go from the Palladium to Bucerias is a bargain! Punta de Mita is much more authentic Mexican and the harbour there is truly a fascinating place to visit.

The only negative thing I have to say about the Palladium is to do with the small beach they have. There are volcanic headlands sticking out into the ocean on both sides which you can walk around at low tide. So the shoreline is very broken on both sides and walking the headlands can be a physical challenge. I enjoyed walking the 10 km beach in the Riviera Nayarit section on another trip, so the beach at the Palladium was a disappointment for me. On the other hand, the broken coastline made for some interesting pictures.
This is a superb location if you want a quiet relaxing vacation. Highly recommended.

Number one if I am at an all inclusive resort I do not want to have to pay for a cab to escape for a decent meal. The food at this resort is dreadful. The only half decent meal you can get is breakfast and good luck getting anything hot, even when the dining area is slow.

The wine they serve is undrinkable. The white is way too sweet and when I tried the red wine with dinner it is served chilled and is like grape juice. We ended up ordering bottles of cheap chillean wine for $130 pesos from room service. This was at least drinkable.

The place is clean. That is the only good thing I can say about it.

After this experience I will never stay at an all inclusive resort ever again. Part of the vacation experience is eating good food and drinking decent wine and you will not get this at the Royal Suites.
