“Perfect Wedding!!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 24, 2012

My wife and I have our wedding at Rancho San Cayetano and it can only be described as PERFECT on all aspects.

The Rancho was shown at its best with the perfect sunny and clear sky, the food was delicious & the service was perfect,,,, needless to say the support of the Staff was also perfect.

At the next, we all family and friends have a great breakfast buffet to help us recover from all the fun & dancing of the wedding.

I just returned from my annual trip to Rancho San Cayetano. I thought it would be hard to improve on overall stay satisfaction over last year, but they did. Pablo and Lisette, owners, have built 3 bi-level bungalow suites, which are a delight and I had the pleasure of staying in one of them. New concrete walkways around the gardens have been added, new lighting, new phone system, new TV's , a massage room.(yes, I had one) As always, the food was superb and the staff attention excellent. The gardens, with their fruit trees, exotic flowers, are immaculately kept and a delight to behold. They do need to get Gideon Bibles for the rooms .I'll be back next year for the butterfly season.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the new bi-level suites.

If seeing a Monarch migration is on your list, this is the place to experience it. Beware of the weekend crowds. My advice would be to go/stay during the week. The tours will be more intimate, the food more delicious and the hotel grounds quiet. Your hosts Pablo and Lisette, will arrange it all, tho it will cost you... but it's worth it (imho)!
The grounds are lovely as the other reviewers have stated and yes, there are dogs, now 4 of them and they are delightful. And yes, there is wifi, best accessed in the 'hotel rooms' or the common areas. The rest of our party stayed in Casa Sol (AWESOME space!) but no wifi. And yes, there is extra purified water. You just need to ask. :) We brought our own water bottles to dinner and afterward filled them with their wonderfully herb infused pitchers. Note: You do get 3 pitchers of purified water in your rooms, 1 in the bathroom, 1 for your coffe and 1 on your desk.
Nuf' about the hotel... But do ask for Joel as your guide if you can. Once up in the mountains, surrounded by the magnificant throngs of Monarchs, knowing what they have endured to make this journey (one generation down from Canada, 8 (?) generations to get back up) you may feel very silly about your currant worries. I know I did. ;) Salute!

Room Tip: Casa Sol is the closest to the hotel and is a great gathering area if you're traveling in a grou...

A second stay with the Rancho San Cayetano team, and it was better than the first. The staff could not be more helpful and concerned about guests' wishes and comfort. The meals served in the comfortable dining room, always with a welcome, warm fire in the stone fireplace, are more than ample, all fresh, local ingredients are used and all are generally delicious. The wine list is not huge, but perfectly drinkable choices are available. The staff helped with drivers and guides as needed. The fees for these were more than reasonable. Michoacan is a stunningly beautiful state and the Monarch butterflies are beyond UNESCO quality--approaching life-changing.

After reading several negative reviews on tripadvisor, I was a little apprehensive about our recent stay with our grandkids to see the Monarch butterflies. But we were pleasantly surprised. The grounds were beautiful and our suite (Casa del Sol) was roomy and comfortable. We enjoyed playing cards at the table outside our romm and then warming up with a fire in the wood stove when the sun went down.
The food prices seem a bit high at about $17 p/p for breakfast and $35 for dinner but we are glad we decided to try the breakfast the first day and liked it so well we had breakfast again the second day. Great egg dishes with plenty of sausage and bacon and homemade bread and jams along with juice and delicious. strong cafe de olla.
If you go, don't forget to get their advice on where to see the butterflies. They gave us information on a preserve we didn't know about.

Room Tip: We got a quote in dollars and pesos and found that the peso quote was cheaper. Ask for the price in...

If you do stay here, do not be tempted to eat at their 'restaurant'. Unfortunately we ate there twice and dinner is a set menu - you have no choice. For US$35, dinner was terribly over-priced by US standards. For Mexico, it's just ridiculous. The meals were of poor quality (tasteless carrot soup and over-cooked, soggy, grey vegetables). One of us is vegetarian, we gave the owner 2 days prior notice of this and still all they could come up with was a piece of broccoli as the replacement for beef - and still charged the vegetarian US$35!!

Please note, the lovely town of Zitacuaro is only 5 minutes drive or taxi-ride down the road and has plenty of eating places.

Breakfast, I was told by email prior to booking, that this would be complimentary for us. We were offered breads and jams, juice and tea, which were lovely. But then the owner came to ask if we'd like something off the menu - we said sure and ordered some eggs - there was never any mention the eggs came with a cost. Upon checking out, we were charged US$8.50 each for this breakfast. Apparently this was a 'light breakfast' - not the complimentary one.

Service in the 'restaurant' is fine. The building and grounds are beautiful and clean. However the place is right on the highway, so the traffic noise - including all cars, motorbikes and plenty of trucks with their exhaust brakes - is very loud and very noticeable, day and night. Apparently we were staying in one of the less-noisy rooms.

When booking our room, we requested one with a fireplace in particular. The wood stocked for our fire burnt out after 2 hours. There was no more firewood to be seen - we had to find the owner and ask for more. Since I feel the cold terribly and was not used to the altitude, I had no intention of being cold for US$130 a night. So this was a little disappointing too.

The tour to the butterflies, although it was fun and interesting and spectacular, it also left us disappointed because for US$80 per person, we had to drive our own car - and take the guide and one other person with us!!!!!!! The other person also paid US$80 and we were not compensated for having to drive our own car. It was a 1 hour round trip. Fortunately for all of us, my husband is relatively comfortable driving on Mexican roads and didn't mind, however charging full price for a sub-standard tour is just rude.

Before booking our stay, I asked if we could pay in credit card. I was told by email yes this would be fine. After I had booked, I was told by email that cash or personal cheque is the preferred payment option. This was fine but a little sneaky I think.

They actually do your bill up in US dollars, then do the conversion to MX pesos using their own conversion rate. Again, I find this rude (since we are Mexico!) and just another blatant way of getting a little (or a lot of) extra money out of you.

The place has a nice feel to it, and the owners give an illusion of friendship, until you have to pay. Then it's easy to realise it was all a sneaky exercise in getting money out of you for nothing.

Friends had recommended this place to us because of the butterfly tour they offer and this is why we chose to stay there despite the many non-favourable reviews. But there are plenty of other places to stay in the area. And if, like us, you want to do this butterfly tour in particular, then I recommend booking it through someone else. Access to this butterfly reserve is not exclusive to Rancho San Cayetano.

Room Tip: Ask for less highway noise (or bring ear plugs) and extra firewood if you want to be warm.

I had the pleasure of spending Thanksgiving at Rancho San Cayetano and it was a memorable experience. The hotel is superbly maintained and has tropical flowers and trees on several acres of property. The rooms are very comfortable, each with a fireplace and a superb assortment of welcome amenities in the rooms and bathrooms. On arrival, they welcome you with a plate of meringue kisses and chocolate cookies in your room. There are several chalets and bi-level suites.
The owners, Pablo and Lisette Span, are gracious and congenial and are there to make sure you have a great stay. Tours to see visit the Monarch butterfly Sanctuary and other excursions are quickly arranged. Unique local artisan gifts are for sale in their gift shop. For me the best were Lisette’s meals. Such an abundance of local and European dishes, exquisitely prepared. Keep space for her desserts.
Only suggestion I have is to have (free) Gideon bibles in the rooms.. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Call in advance to owner Pablo or Doris, owner's assistant.
