It had been warm as we roamed the pyramids of Teotihuacan for several hours on our own-- having taken a public bus from Mexico. I had heard of a restaurant in a cave within about a half mile walking -- up between the Pyramids of the Moon and the Sun I saw an old signboard with "La Gruta"...so we walked down the dirt path/roadway. Out of pretty much nowhere was the bustle of a full fledge restaurant located within caves emerging below our right: colorfully painted chairs -- tons of tables and maybe about 6 or 7 parties eating - mid to late afternoon on a weekday. Its been there forever --

why not? the food is certainly good enough, very traditional service..relaxing and a great rest before hiking back to the bus stop at Teotihuacan and waiting for the bus back to the city; you don't have to eat a whole meal...just get some soup and some flan and relax. Truly a unique place to reflect on the enormity of Teotihuacan before walking back down the grand avenue. its one of those places that sticks in the memory! Caveat: This would be a very cold place in the winter

We really enjoyed our dinner at La Gruta after visiting the pyramids. Yes, it was pricey. But it was worth it, especially since it's one of the main things our 5 kids keep talking about after the trip.

The food is very good, lots of real traditional mexican dishes available. But the best part is the place, inside a big cave.

I agree that you pay a lot, but I think the place and ambiance is worth it. If you are there on vacation and want to do something special. The food was very delicious, starting with the free appetizer jicama salad to the tortilla soup and the lamb in wrapped in the leaf of the Agave.

La Gruta was the perfect conclusion to our long day trekking the dusty grounds of Los Pyramides of Teotihuacan under the sun. It had been recommended to us by our host in Cuernavaca, so we decided to give it a try.

As the gates closed and the parking lots emptied, we ran the guantlet of menu waving waiters and waiters on the restuarant lined road outside Teotihuacan to our destination with a little directional assistance. The machine gun toting guard reminded us where we were and why he was there.

We descended the steps into the cool depths of the cave where most of the brightly colored tabes were occupied, creating a cacaphonous atmosphere accented with the music from a strolling mariachi band. Attentive waiters in formal wear soon swooped to take our order for appetizers and drinks.

The menu offered good mexican fare with some nice unusual touches like rabbit and huitlacoche. The food and service were very good but the real attraction was the cave. One could imagine the upper class residents of Teotihuacan seeking refuge in it's depths, and maybe continuing their bloody rites. A most enjoyable time.
