“Beautiful Hotel Meson de San Antonio”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

We spent a week in Patzcuaro with our two teen daughters in July 2013. We drove from San Miguel de Allende to Patzcuaro and the only problems we encountered in Mexico was our fuel pump going out. We live in Texas so driving to Mexico is very doable for us. I would strongly suggest that you don't drive at night. This was our third stay at Meson San Antonio. We love this beautifully restored hacienda. Each room has a fireplace that is a joy to light up after being in the Texas heat! We usually forget to pack jackets but the artisan market is right across the street and convenient for purchasing a rebozo , sweater or jacket. Each room is simply but beautifully decorated. Some rooms are larger with two double beds and an alcove with an additional double bed. The courtyard garden is wild but beautiful! They also have a beautiful living room and a fabulous kitchen that can be used by the guests. My daughters made their own dinner while we went out one evening. The prices are very good and the owners and staff are exceptional.

So, we ignored the warnings and went to Patzcuaro, which we loved. Felt not an ounce of danger there. Saw no military etc. San Antonio is staffed by a gracious family. Off street parking was 30 pesos a day. Our room had a fireplace in which fresh logs were placed daily. Fresh coffee and rolls every day in the main lodge of the hotel. It felt like being on a Spanish hacienda from 100's of years ago. I loved it and plan to return.

We stayed here on a wonderful vacation over holy week. What a find! The hotel is small, with the room arranged around a beautiful courtyard full of flowers.

The rooms were large with simple yet lovely decorations (fresh flowers, for example). Though we didn't use the fireplace, it added a nice touch. The room was a little chilly in the morning, but nothing a light sweater couldn't handle. If you're not used to traveling in Mexico, be aware that the floors are rarely carpeted, so they're hard and can be cold in the mornings - pack accordingly.

The hotel is within easy walking distance to the town center and many restaurants. It offers a continental-style breakfast in the mornings, but the dining room is open all day and late into the night, so you can enjoy a snack or conversation with friends. Guests have access to (and as far as we could tell, were encouraged to use) a sink for washing up their dishes.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, as was their dog.

This might be my favorite hotel in Mexico. It is not fancy, but it's very attrative and clean, great service. It's very authentic and simpy lovely. The owners are very friendly. Breakfast can be rolls and coffee but sometimes they cook a big Mexican breakfast.

Room Tip: We always loved Room #15, it's on 2 levels. Couldn't get that room last time but enjoyed a...

As is my norm, I sent an email requesting reservations for four nights and our favorite room and received a very prompt response. Our room was in its normal condition - very clean, fully stocked and firewood laid in the fireplace each day. Since we had just attempted to sleep on a bed we swore had a matress made of marble - we were looking forward to the comfortable beds at Meson de San Antonio. And they didn't disappoint!

Unlike previous trips, they actually had an almost full house on Friday and Saturday night, which we were pleased to see. Not only were they busier but Patzcuaro seemed to have many more tourists than on our previous trips.

Room Tip: Our favorite remains #15!

Great hotel, Beautiful Colonial Mexico, each room has a fireplace and is on a big courtyard with cactus and flowering plants, right down the street from the Basilicia and only a few blocks walk to the center. Under Reno in some rooms but the ones done are wonderful.

Room Tip: Rooms 9 or 15 are great

Lovely people running the hotel, however we were the only people staying there because most of the rooms were being upgrades, so it was very quiet. Very clean and we would stay there again. Great value and lovely to sit beside a real wood fire in our room
