I picked Meson de San Antonio based on the glowing TripAdvisor reviews. generally agree about the positive features. The entire building has been beautifully redone. The courtyard is a delight, the rooms are charming and spotless. There's even free wireless internet.

But noise is a real problem. There's a nightclub in the basement of the hotel that plays pounding rock music. The bass comes up through the tile floors and bounces around in the adobe walled rooms. I was there Friday and Saturday nights, and the music went on well past midnight, making sleep impossible.

Then, when the music finally stops, there are the neighbors' dogs. We're not talking an occasional bark here and there. We're talking constant barking from multiple directions for hours on end. It's really a shame, because the owners have done such a nice job with the place.

Our stay at the Hotel Meson de San Antonio was a completely wonderful experience. We stayed for a week, one half during the otherwise crazy Semana Santa (Easter Week) and enjoyed every minute. The hotel is so wonderful its a bit hard to decide which elements to focus on, but rest assured, from the friendly and helpful staff to the stunningly beautiful architecture/garden to the perfect location to the quite economical cost, its hard to imagine a better place to stay in Patzcuaro.

The recently remodeled rooms all face onto a interior courtyard/garden (if you wish, the proprietor (a former agronomist) will give you a botanical tour). A variety of sitting/dining areas surround the courtyard with a mix of sunny and covered locations, tables, couches, chaise lounges. It is a wonderful space that even with 4-5 groups of people sitting in separate locations, the garden/courtyard remains peaceful. Even better is the living room/dining room/kitchen combo space in front. Its hard to imagine a better designed room, just a classic piece of Mexican architecture. Best of all, the kitchen is set up for the use of the guests, so a quick trip to the market (4 beautiful blocks away) and you can whip up a quick meal or something more extravagant. There is a bar to eat at or a full dining room table. At the far end of this wonderful room is the living room space with an incredible decorated fireplace.

Each room is uniquely decorated with wonderful works of art from Michoacan as well as a beautiful fireplace (the rooms are stocked with wood - Patzcuaro is located at approximately 7000 feet which even in the tropics can be cool at night during some months of the year).

The only downside we can think of concerning Meson de San Antonio is that the beds are a bit hard (common in Mexican Hotels).

This beautiful place is a perfect gem. Alfredo is a knowledgeable gentleman who imparts an air of grace to his beautiful meson. Breakfast in the great room was a treat as were all of his recommendations for trips and restaurants. Our first meal in Patzcuaro was the "head" taco stand outside the door and we returned again and again for our $2 dinner.

Try to get a room with a fireplace. It's worth it.

We chose this hotel for the second half of our honeymoon after being married at the Hotel Brisas del Mar in Zihuatanejo. It was a perfect complement to that town in every way--cool, breezy weather which felt wonderful after a few days on the beach; a quiet, peaceful atmosphere which was perfect for us to read, take long walks, and just unwind. We felt like we could move at our own pace and observe the fascinating local culture.

Everything was very authentic and very affordable, and the Meson was a wonderful "home" to come back to each afternoon and build a fire and take a nap during the brief daily thunderstorm. Alfredo and his wife were delightful hosts and we really enjoyed their company. We appreciated the ability to use the internet in the hotel lobby but found we also were glad for the ability to detach from the compulsion to check email etc while we were in our room.

The town is very conducive to walking and exploring, and has some beautiful churches and amazing local food. We became addicted to the homemade tamales and the (very rich) ice cream!

One note is that it is definitely a town where at least some Spanish is a prerequisite, but with a basic knowledge we could function pretty well in restaurants, cabs, shops, etc. For us it was a challenge that we enjoyed, and we would definitely return to this town and this hotel again!

I loved the Meson de San Antonio! My clean, quiet (except for the native celebration complete with immense firecrackers beyond the hotel's control), beautifully decorated room, with comfortable bed, large bathroom with good water pressure in the shower, wi-fi, a working fireplace, cable TV with what must have been 100 channels, outdoor hacienda garden area for sitting, large main room, and Alfredo -- a most helpful host. As I recall the story of the Meson it was an eighteenth century inn that the new owners were restoring. I felt like I was transported to an earlier time and a place far away from my life in the USA whenever I entered the large double doors that led from the street. The price was a bargain for what I had. Alfredo or the front desk clerk were helpful with hints on what to do and in making travel plans. It was nice to have coffee in the morning, even though the continental breakfast (cookies or sweet rolls) were not the best feature of the Meson.
