Owner description: Town known for its copper craftsmanship.

The town is very cute and keeps the characteristics of the towns that sorround Patzcuaro lake. The houses are white and red all along downtown. It has a main plaza where a lot of artisans expose their copper pieces. You can walk 2 blocks from downtown and go to the actual shops and see the artisans working on their pieces. Depending on the day of the week and season, one or more shops are open and you can have a little tour with explanation on how copper is worked and pieces decorated.

This was such an unexpected delight--we took a (nice) bus from Patzcuaro to Santa Clara del Cobre and found the little town clean, charming, and ALL about copper. The museum was filled with extraordinary works of copper art. The finest quality I have ever seen. My husband was amazed while going through the foundry and watching the workers forge copper into beautiful pieces. A worthwhile side trip from Patzcuaro!

It is a nice landscape view during the trip, but once you get there, there is not much to do or see.

Santa Clara del Cobre aka Villa Escalante or Salvador Escalante on many maps is located about a 20 to 25 minute drive into the mountains from Patzcuaro, Michoacan. Since we import copper products to the US, we have made numerous trips to this town. Its location means that it is surrounded by mature pines and there is a definite "mountain feel" to the community. There is a large "indigenous" population and they have been working copper dating back to the pre-Hispanic period. Roughly 80% of the town's population is involved in the making of copper products. In the early days, copper ore was brought into the region but virtually 100% of todays copper products are made from 100% recycled copper. The town enjoyed a real boom back in the late 1990's and early 2000's but has been experiencing a downturn because of 9/11, higher world copper prices and cheap imports from India and China, neither of which can match the handmade techniques, the traditions or the quality of the products from Santa Clara.

Stay in either Patzcuaro or Morelia but visit this town for a real educational experience and see some of the finest copper products in the world! They can certainly use the business!
