This forum seems to ignore one of the best reasons to go to Guadalajara - the wonderful, slow paced towns along the north shore of lake Chapala, where the folks in Guadalajara go themselves to decompress. The area is lovely, protected from the temperature extremes and smog of Guadalajara by its separation (sixty miles) and intervening mountains. The lake, although it is low, still modulates the weather and the towns are charming and low-key. Chapala is a typical small Mexican town with several hotels, banks, etc. Ajijic is a sleepy community with a beautiful plaza and church, lakefront living, and numerous B&B's and small hotels, notably the beautiful Los Artistas B&B and the Nueva Posada inn. Due to the many US and Canadian residents, many service personal have good English, and the economy has responded to the ex-pat community with services that most small Mexican towns simply do not have available. But the ambiance remains puro Mexicano and the living is idyllicly easy. The towns are only half an hour by cab from the Guadalajara airport and there are many more choices for rooms than the outstanding pair I have mentioned.
