Enchantment wraps the heart the moment one enters Ajijic, but magic replaces it when one crosses through "la puerta," the door to Ajijic Suites. Peering into the hallway, a visitor is greeted by a pair of ornate iron gates that show flair but also assure security, not that it is really needed in Ajijic. The eyes are drawn to the book case beyond the gates and into the grand foyer of the suites- a vibrant and alive space that splashes the eye with the dashing colors of Méjico- that beckon the weary body to sit a spell, to absorb the calm, and experience the tranquility cast on the place by the fountain in the outer courtyard just beyond the window pane. Bóveda ceilings reach high into the air and invite visitors to exhale their cares and worries high into their splendid arches. It is from this place that one can then explore the many private spaces that make up suites. The lower rooms are the grand rooms, each filled with exactly the things to make them become the perfect place for travelers to ground themselves for extended stays or merely refresh from a day's adventures around the lake. Outside the foyer are the other suites that tempt visitors and guests alike with either their balcony, outdoor patio, or breathtaking view of the mountain and lake. The last was my suite, and I not only adored the view, but also made a new friend of the huge hummingbird who sat outside my window every morning making sure that I was happy to share his home with him. How could I not find happiness here? The suite had everything I could want including a marvelous nook with two wooden bar stools that became my favorite place to sit, reflect, and write. To be sure, there was also a stuffed chair in the room which was large enough to hold my curled up feet while I spent time finishing the last chapter of a book I started while on the plane. Across from it was the armoire and television complete with cable including three channels of just English stations should one feel the need to be connected to that language. The kitchen was on the other side and had a refrigerator, work space, microwave, drip coffee maker, and all the utensils needed to make the room nearly self contained. On the other side of the kitchen was the bathroom, a clean and modern space done in white tile and sparkling clean with a generous supply of towels, soaps, and even wash cloths. Purified water was available in both the kitchen and the bathroom which eliminated the worry about needing to spend too much time in the bathroom later in the week! Because of the great comfort there, I found that my week passed entirely too quickly. Elaine and Luis were and are the best hosts I have experienced anywhere, and they have created a destination for those traveling to Ajijic. The best part of the visit has to be the many memories they helped me create. The worst part of the trip was returning to the United States and leaving behind the amazing pueblo of Ajijic, the many extraordinary guests and owners at this hotel, the wonderfully kind and heart- warming people of the village, and my new friend- the hummingbird.
