“Visit the salt works in addition to the whales”

Malarrimo Eco-Tours
Attraction details

Malarrimo Eco-Tours mainly features whale watching tours and also visits to the cave paintings in the area. But a third tour is offered, of the "ESS" salt company, the world's largest salt producer. Tours can be arranged directly with the company, which is daunting if you don't speak Spanish, or Malarrimo can arrange a tour for about US $10.

The tour group owns the best hotel and restaurant in the tiny town of Guerrero Negro. They were the first group to begin tours to see one of the highest concentration of Grey wales in the world. From the hotel we were able to go directly to the boat launch to get out to see the whales. The small, 10 person launches allow you to get up right next to the whales. Best time to touch whales is late February through March. On a case-by-case basis, the group may also provide limited tours of the world's largest open-air salt mine. Apart from that, there is not a whole lot else to do in the town and it has limited shopping as it exists primarily for the salt mine and has not yet developed a strong tourism economy. Not recommended for people requiring handicap access. Make sure you baby-talk the whales, they like it.
