“The Baja Cactus Hotel, El Rosario”
Reviewed October 6, 2012

We have stayed there many times. Large rooms, comfortable beds, beautiful baths. Built with native stone and hand-finished beds. Coffee pot in room. TV with a few English stations. Walled, secure parking with space for PU and trailer. Friendly clerks. Mama Espinoza's is 2 doors down for breakfast. Gas station on the other side. Prices for the new rooms start at 450 pesos. Don't stay in the old rooms!! Ask for the new rooms. The old rooms are only 200 pesos but seriously, they are OLD and in poor condition.

My ONLY complaints:
Weak internet but does work.
We made reservations once that were given to other guests. The clerk was apologetic and made us reservations at the "Hotel Tourista" which was completely acceptable, cheaper but not as nice. I'll review it also.

Room Tip: Ask for the new rooms.

Stayed in one of the new rooms which was very large and clean. Unfortunately the aircon unit was leaking lots of water so just used the ceiling fan.

Bathroom was very nice and had good facilities.

Very helpful staff. They gave me a Ethernet cable for my laptop as the WiFi signal was intermittent in the room.

We did look at the old rooms to see the difference and they were not as bad as some people have described on here. They were clean but tired looking. Bed's seemed comfortable.

With the price difference for the rooms, it has something for low or medium budget.

Would definitely stay here again.

Aside from the fact that their A/C didn't work, it's a great hotel in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. Restaurant next door has solid service, but food costs 3x what it should, considering location. Friendly staff, nice town, considering it's a solid distance from nearly anything.

Room Tip: 202 is the best one, imho.

Great motel, best deal in Baja for sure....however......they take your driver's license as collateral for the room, and gave me someone elses the next groggy morning. Who looks at them? The guy who got mine didn't either, and we managed to get in touch a month later, but WHAT a hassle. Ever been pulled over in Ensenada with someone else's license? Good thing I speak Spanish. Yes, I will go back to Baja Cactus, and YES I will be more cautious with my ID.

Room Tip: Call in advance for a reservation-

Baja Cactus Motel is a great place to stay on our drive to Loreto, BCS from San Diego. Our family just wanted to get some rest but we were pleasantly surprised that the new rooms had all the comforts of home. The night staff was professional and bilingual and we were able to enjoy a good nights sleep. We stayed here on our drive south and stayed again on our way back to San Diego. Highly recommended as a place stop before dark and the price is great.

Room Tip: Call in advance, we were lucky to get a room on our drive south and our drive back. Each night the...

On your way south, as you come down the hill into El Rosario, you'll see a Pemex station on your left. It's the only gas station in town. To the right of the station, right next to it, there is a gem of a hotel, although they call it a "motel". There is no sign, but you'll see two handsome, brown stone pillars.

Drive through this "gate" and you'll come across a remarkable hotel. Across from the recepción there are some older units. These are very inexpensive, and probably very basic. We never stayed in them, so can't comment.

The new part of the hotel, however, consists of wonderful rooms. The first thing that impresses you is the unusual fit and finish. The showers are things of beauty with tempered glass walls and doors. The floors sport gorgeous, large tiles, and the king beds are inviting. There are modern ac/heat units, but it isn't obvious how to operate them.

The most important aspect of this place is the price. A room with a single king can be had for $30-35, and for $35-40 you get two kings. There is free WiFi near the lobby area.

We would recommend this place highly. It's by far the most impressive in El Rosario. The hotel has no comedor (dining room), but we found the restaurant at Hotel Sinahi, a mile, or so further, on the left, to be excellent.

Room Tip: Get help with the air/heat unit. In our room we turned on the thermostat, selected heat, the unit c...
