While staying at the Baja Cactus Motel next door, we ate dinner and breakfast at Mama Expinoza's. The food was very good with low prices. Nice to have both this motel and restaurant on the way down Baja.

Gave this restaurant 2 tries hoping the 2nd visit would be better.
Taco chips are out of a bag (circular). (First clue)
First trip: Chicken quesadilla. Very dry. No other sides came with plate.
Second trip: Chicken enchiladas. Cold, dry and some off flavor that I was unable to describe.
Mama would be so upset if she were alive.

This restaurant has been in business for 70+ years. it has a lot of memorabilia from Baja motorcycle races. We had fish tacos (fried fish but very tasty) and flan. We were with a large tour group and they served us very efficiently.

We stopped here for dinner, as we were spending the night in El Rosario on our way back to San Diego. We have heard about this place for years.....famous Baja family, well-known spot during the Baja 100 race. Evybody who knows Baja has at least heard about this place. I had heard mix reviews....some said it was great, others said it was expensive and going downhill.

I can only base my review on what I experienced, so here goes:

The restaurant is on the main drag next to a Pemex station....impossible to miss. It's a cool looking building, and even cooler when you walk inside. You just know this place has been around for a long time. Tons of pictures and memorabilia from road warriors and Baja 100 participants. We were seated and immediately ordered a couple cocktails. They were fine. We ordered guacamole and chips ($3.50), and the guacamole was really good. I could tell it was made to order, and also came with a small plate of fress-cut Queso Fresa cheese.....yummy.

We split an order of the famous Lobster Burritos ($17.00) for an appetizer, and they were very good. Simple preparation that let the butter-poached lobster shine through. We ate them quickly and ordered a couple more drinks. We both ordered Crab Quesadillas ($11.00) as the main course, and we were thrilled. The plates came with 3 huge Quesadillas stuffed with cheese and crab. Once again, simple preparation that let the main ingredients be the star.

We were too full to have dessert....we just wanted to go to the hotel (Bajacactus Motel) and sleep. We spent $45 on a meal that would have been twice that much in the US. Sure, this place isn't cheap, but we were on vacation and were more concerned with eating somethign great than we were how much it cost.

Negative - the service was a bit slow, and out waiter seemed more interested in his Facebook account on his iPhone than he was with our table, but he was fine......

Overall - it was really good and we will be back
