“Enricas Inn and Guest House Great Inagua”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2012

We stayed as a party of six friends in May 2012 and enjoyed this guesthouse and were beautifully looked after by Mrs Palacious, her sister and Mum! You need to pre arrange meals if you require it and we were lucky enough to have 2 wonderful dinners prepared by Mrs P and her team. Nothing was too much trouble for them and we enjoyed them enormously

There is a lovely small beach only 5 minutes walk away in town and we met lots of local residents who were keen to welcome us to their island. We were given a wonderful tour of the island by Henry, the local wildlife warden and policeman and saw thousands of flamingoes and other birds. The only disappointment was not seeing any of the wild donkeys that live on the island. The salt flats and mountain were interesting and we enjoyed the whole tour.

Great Inagua is definitely worth visiting - the flights from Nassau are not daily but you will visit the real Bahamas and get a very warm welcome.

Wife and I stayed here for 3 Days in Jan. 2005. If you are looking for the Ritz Carlton and everday amenities this is not for you. However if you want to see what the unspoiled bahamas are like. This is where you need to be. Yes the rooms are older but very comfortable. as for not having a phone, this is one of the best features. What are vacations for after all.
This is truly one place to really "get away from it all" and still sleep in a comfortable room with AC and a hot shower. At the very south end of the island is a fantastic lighthouse. I believe was built in the 1800's. simply walk up to the keepers house and let him know you are there, sign the guest book in the light house and climb the staircase to the top. Never will you get a better view of absolutely pristine waters. As for the people of the island. Each and every time my wife and I would begin walking down the street, within 10 minutes people would be stopping to ask if we needed a ride. Several even went out of thier way to take us where we wanted to go and offered to come back and pick us up. Had one Gentleman even gave us a complete tour of the island, including morton salt and the gorgeous flamingos, We did tip him $50.00 for this couple hour tour and his vast knowledge of the island. Food can be diffcult to find if you don't know what to look for. Although there is always the Inagua general store, and the somewhat limited selection they have. The first day here, we were given a ride to Geneva's cafe outside of town. She was open yet we were the only two people there to eat. She told us though, that she only prepared snacks on this day and not entire meals. After about 40 minutes wait, she brought out our "snacks". Mine was the conch, my wife's the chicken. I found out why it took so long to prepare a "snack". The wife had 4 pieces of chicken with a modest salad, as for mine, 5 whole, tender and deliciously prepared conch. I thought to my self, This is what you call a snack. Enough food for 4 people. But all was freshly prepared and could not have tasted better nor fresher. The Walkines also prepare meals for the people at thier guest house but you will have to ask, it is not an automatic or included service and please remember it is just that, a service to you. As a side note, there is also rental car service on the island, be sure to call ahead and always carry cash. Plan on making this hidden little gem of a retreat a future destination several times over. All in all, not for the timid, the power shopper or easily bored kids. Couples seeking the ultimate get away from it all look no further. Friendliest people you could ever hope to meet.
