“One of my Favourite Hotels to "Chill Out"”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

At least once a year we stay over on our way down or back to New Brunswick at the Auberge du Faubourg - and there are about 50 reasons why, of which I only have space for talking about why I think this is such a jewel, sitting on the southside of the St. Lawrence River about 60 or so kilometers from Quebec City, just off the Trans Canada Highway. The hotel is part of Saint Jean Port Joli great offerings of B&Bs, small hotels, nice restaurants and world renowned wood carvers.

You have to like the old style of hotels combined with motels and cottages that exist along Quebec's St. Lawrence River and these extend from Quebec City right through to the Gaspe and into northern N.B. There are motel rooms near the water, on two levels - one level with doors facing out to the water and the other with doors facing out to the grass, treed and swimming pool area, but still with a large window in each unit that looks out onto the St. Lawrence. Also, there are cabins that are at the lower level although these I think are now being replaced and/or updated. Nearer the highway that runs through Saint Jean Port Joli there is a large hotel facility which includes a spa and next door there is a building that houses the reception area and a magnificent restaurant.

We like the motel units down by the water because you can go out from your room onto the front lawn and sit in those great wooden summer chairs and have a nice glass of wine or beer and take in the beauty of the St. Lawrence and the mountains that are on the north side - the sunsets are fantastic. The rooms are simple, clean and very functional - usually two double, queen size beds and all the other basic amenities you would need. We like it because this is a hotel that takes dogs as well as their owners - layout is perfect. Auberge du Faubourg have tried and I think successfully to keep the old style but yet update and keep things fresh.

There's an outdoor pool and cabana - very nice.

But the best part of the hotel is the restaurant - incredible inside with huge windows looking out over the St. Lawrence, a high ceiling, and these beautiful wood sculptured panels all around the areas between the windows and the ceiling. The white table clothes with real silver settings and wonderful dishes only start to introduce the breakfast, lunch and dinner that can be had in this room. They have a package that allows you to have dinner and breakfast as well as your room for a fixed price - not cheap, but certainly not unreasonable. To sit at a table in the restaurant and watch the sun going down in the west, while having a 1st glass meal, with a good wine and/or delicious coffee is out of this world.

If you want a short retreat from the Trans Canada Highway and want to enjoy a wonderful experience with your family and or friends (including 4-legged ones) - take in the Auberge du Faubourg - make sure you book well in advance - they get very, very busy.

Room Tip: Motels by the water are great because of the view and close proximity to the St. Lawrence but they c...

The Auberge Du Faubourg used to be an icon of St. Jean Port Joli as the upscale hotel with an elegant dining room. However time and neglect have left this grande dame of a hotel in a state of disrepair and deterioration that likely is beyond recovery.

I made a reservation for a two night stay for the end of March 2013. On arrival, there were no other cars in the parking area. Granted the property is closed in winter, and workers were trimming bushes around the property, the condition of the rooms was less than acceptable.

Of the three rooms we investigated, each had a smell of mould from having been closed and damp all winter. The paint on the old wooden windows and doors was peeling on all their buildings, doors did not close properly and doors were locked with old fashioned locks that required a thumb turn to lock from inside.

When the electric baseboard heaters were turned on, the residue of dust and mould on the heater elements began burning, causing an acrid smell in the room making it uninhabitable.

This once elegant hotel has passed its prime, and through neglect and lack of maintenance is a disgrace to the the town of St. Jean Port Joli. Surprisingly they continue to charge premium prices for accommodations that are substandard.

I asked for and received my deposit for the reservation and and went to a neighboring B&B where the accommodations were excellent

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

Perfect spot to spend the night when travelling to the maritimes from the GTA. The food was delicious and the cabin we stayed in was very clean and was right on the St. Lawrence, beautiful view.
It is pet friendly we had our big Newfoundland dog with us.
The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: The cabins by the river are worth the extra money.

A decent place. Rooms are clean and the price is reasonable. The view is spectacular and most rooms have a direct view of the river. We had dinner and wine on the lawn in front of the river and that was amazing. Service was ok, rooms should include basic info about the hotel, like where to find ice etc.

The Auberge Du Faubourg is in transition with one section, where we stayed, slated for redevelopment. There is a condo, possibly a time-share, being built on the eastern corner of this large property on the St. Lawrence River which is behind the unit we stayed in. Our accommodation was adequate but steeped in the remnants of early 1960s motel leisure. The furnishings were dated but fine. The bed was soft and pillows lumpy with threadbare covers. We occupied one room and our friends, the other. There was no one else that we saw in this separate building. We paid top dollar for this accommodation through Hotels.com which did not include any special amenities, such as spa treatment or meals but we were glad to find this facility, partly because there are few hotels or motels, if any, in the vicinity; we stayed in July for 2 nights. The reception staff were pleasant, courteous and accommodating. They graciously stored our purchases of local cheese since there wasn't a refrigerator in the room. The two buildings to the west of the one we stayed in seemed to be better maintained. One served for the restaurant and reception and the other for spa treatments. There is a building with units by the water front on the western side where there were a number of cars parked, so possibly there were more people vacationing at this Auberge.

We were 2 days at this hotel, it was wonderfull. The spa, its cuisine and its river sight are the best.
The people are very kind and give a good service to their visitors.
The only thing is this hotel would be offer their jacuzy service the whole year or offer other amenities.

I'm frustrated for not enjoying the pool or jacuzzy in spring season. Because there is not to much things to do at st jean port joli, so it's a little boried rest without nothing to do at the hotel.

Our room and its bathroom were clean, but the room did have a musty odour and the furnishings were tired. As mentioned by the other reviewer, this is a motel not an auberge.

At one point the owner may have had designs on creating a true retreat, as the view out over the St. Lawrence River towards the Le Massif ski resort is truly exceptional. But the grass needs more regular cutting, odds and ends around the property need to be cleaned up, and the architecture is decidedly that of a motel.

That said, breakfast in the restaurant was good and the pool was very well maintained.
