At least once a year we stay over on our way down or back to New Brunswick at the Auberge du Faubourg - and there are about 50 reasons why, of which I only have space for talking about why I think this is such a jewel, sitting on the southside of the St. Lawrence River about 60 or so kilometers from Quebec City, just off the Trans Canada Highway. The hotel is part of Saint Jean Port Joli great offerings of B&Bs, small hotels, nice restaurants and world renowned wood carvers.
You have to like the old style of hotels combined with motels and cottages that exist along Quebec's St. Lawrence River and these extend from Quebec City right through to the Gaspe and into northern N.B. There are motel rooms near the water, on two levels - one level with doors facing out to the water and the other with doors facing out to the grass, treed and swimming pool area, but still with a large window in each unit that looks out onto the St. Lawrence. Also, there are cabins that are at the lower level although these I think are now being replaced and/or updated. Nearer the highway that runs through Saint Jean Port Joli there is a large hotel facility which includes a spa and next door there is a building that houses the reception area and a magnificent restaurant.
We like the motel units down by the water because you can go out from your room onto the front lawn and sit in those great wooden summer chairs and have a nice glass of wine or beer and take in the beauty of the St. Lawrence and the mountains that are on the north side - the sunsets are fantastic. The rooms are simple, clean and very functional - usually two double, queen size beds and all the other basic amenities you would need. We like it because this is a hotel that takes dogs as well as their owners - layout is perfect. Auberge du Faubourg have tried and I think successfully to keep the old style but yet update and keep things fresh.
There's an outdoor pool and cabana - very nice.
But the best part of the hotel is the restaurant - incredible inside with huge windows looking out over the St. Lawrence, a high ceiling, and these beautiful wood sculptured panels all around the areas between the windows and the ceiling. The white table clothes with real silver settings and wonderful dishes only start to introduce the breakfast, lunch and dinner that can be had in this room. They have a package that allows you to have dinner and breakfast as well as your room for a fixed price - not cheap, but certainly not unreasonable. To sit at a table in the restaurant and watch the sun going down in the west, while having a 1st glass meal, with a good wine and/or delicious coffee is out of this world.
If you want a short retreat from the Trans Canada Highway and want to enjoy a wonderful experience with your family and or friends (including 4-legged ones) - take in the Auberge du Faubourg - make sure you book well in advance - they get very, very busy.
