“Very disappointing”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

Given the reputation of the Fairmont hotels, we were extremely disappointed in our visit. The maitre D' and the wait staff were extremely rude and inattentive. They were not willing to go any length to serve and were very laissez faire. The front desk made an error on our bill causing us to come back after checking out to fix it. The room itself was very outdated, and the carpet dusty. Instead of the usual array of toiletries we received multiple conditioners but no shampoos, an error too late to correct once you are already showering. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel. It is completely overpriced, and definitely not a four or five star experience.

Dear Kim S,

I thank you for your precious feedback. We are always looking forward to our guests feedback to improve on our services. I am sadden to hear that your restaurant experience was not up to your satisfaction, and I would sincerely appreciate to do more research to ensure that we are discussing with the employees in question.

Since we do not have your full name on the reviews, if you could please let me know the reservation name at the hotel and I can look into the meal periods and the wait staff that provided the service, that would help me to conduct the proper follow-ups. You can contact me at genevieve.dumas@fairmont.com.

Thank you again, sincerely, Genevieve

We wanted a little bit of a luxury getaway (given the extortionate price tag) we were pretty disappointed, the place was very run-down: broken elevator, no turn-down service, and overall dusty and dated. I'm sure some may find this "rustic and charming" but not what I had in mind for the cost per night.

Dear Erin M,

Thank you very much for taking the time to let us know about your disappointment. Obviously our goal is to ensure that the feedback we receive is always the best, but I do appreciate your constructive feedback.

I wanted to let you know that our building maintenance is always a priority for us, and that we do all we can to plan and execute regular maintenance and upgrade on our property. We will be changing the 1930 elevator that is broken within the next 2 months, and this is a very challenging operation based on the unique building, so yes, it does take a little longer to execute such changes. We do have 3 more elevators that are available to our guests to use.

We also will have a complete revamp of our main dining room next June, and that is after our exercise room upgrade that has just been completed as well as our entire outdoor pool furniture upgrade.

On a side note, turndown service is not part of Fairmont standards, but you can always receive this service if requested.

Thank you for your feedback!

We stayed at the hotel at the end of a 14 day trip. We stayed there for 4 night just after Easter, and had the hotel practically to ourselves. The hotel is beautiful, and the service was first class even with the reduced staff. The food was top notch, and they were very accommodating with the food for my 2 very picky kids.

Time flew by, and everyone wanted to extend the stay. For we wanted a hotel to just relax, and the hotel was the perfect place. As for pricing ..... It is a Fairmont after all so pricing is consistent with hotels in its category.

Would definitely recommend the hotel.

We enjoyed out 2-night weekend stay. The room was spacious and comfortable with lots of sunlight. Windows opened for fresh country air. The service was excellent everywhere - help with luggage, front desk, dining room (with 1 exception - the waiter for our 1st dinner was not very attentive once we had a question about the bill - everyone in the restaurant, except him, could see we were trying to get his attention). However, that poor service was more than made up for by the exceptionally good service at breakfast the following morning by Daniel - he was a pleasure and a pro. The grand lobby is something to behold - so expansive, but so peaceful with many places to sit and enjoy one of the fireplaces. I also enjoyed the gym, while my wife had a good swim and a great massage at the spa. We also enjoyed a hike on the forested grounds (trails were still snow covered). Overall, we had a great weekend at Montebello.

Room Tip: The rooms at the end of wings are larger and sunnier.

Very interesting use of log buildings - the meals were out of this world, with a most interesting variety - the rooms were all made from exposed logs but quite comfortable - top notch recreation facilities.

My wife and I stayed here mid week in april as a pre Ottawa trip. Since my wife is pregnant we were just looking for a relaxing stay in a beautiful chalet and this resort delivered. Since it was mid week in April with the snow melting, most of the activities were closed, which was fine by us, as we had almost the entire resort to ourselves, was peaceful and romantic sitting in the beautiful grand lobby in front of the fire place where you felt it was almost your own personal room since it was just us for the most part. This can be a wonderful family stay due to all the activities they provide in season and on weekends, but for a couple looking for a bit of romance, we couldn't be the quiet ambiance of this hotel without all the kids making it feel like an upscale Great Wolf Lodge. A lot of the positive reviews I had were still looking down upon the restaurant Aux Chantignoles, but we had a wonderful dinner and breakfast here. The prices were quite reasonable for a hotel like this, and servings were large and quality of food was more then acceptable. I can certainly see us returning here in future, despite the long drive for us.

This hotel is fabulous because of its location, tucked away amongst the woods, and its old world character. The lobby, with its log cabin construction and massive centre fireplace is stunning and a great place to relax and play a board game with the kids and enjoy a drink. The room however, is not as stunning as the lobby and is nice, but not exceptional. The bathroom is extremely small and in need of updating.

This was our second stay at this hotel. The first was in the summer and we returned on our way back from Mont Tremblant so we could take advantage of the winter facilities. Unfortunately, we were there mid-week so many of the offerings were not available to us. We were able to curl and our kids loved that. The pool building is also beautiful with its trussed roof. The pool was quite busy considering there was no one at the hotel and I got the impression from the swimmers, who were all doing laps and seemed to know each other very well, that perhaps they were not staying at the hotel but were using the facilities. My 8 year old daughter was busy jumping and tossing the ball around and she managed most of the time to dodge the lap swimmers. For some reason, the pool was only half open which made the play area and the serious lap swim area, one and the same.

We ate dinner at the pub which is located in the basement. I thought this odd, since the setting of the hotel is really what makes it unique. The food was mediocre and the view of the large tv and pool table was not as nice as if we had a large picture window to look out.

Room Tip: for minimal pedestrian traffic, ask for a room on a hallway that does not lead to the pool

Thank you myturtles for your feedback, which is always appreciated!

I appreciate your feedback and recommendations for room location are indeed a great advice. We do have a very unique hotel and unfortunately we cannot change the size of our bathrooms due to the unique log structure, so our bathrooms are, yes, tiny.

I just want to point out that our pool is an Olympic size one, and therefore, we have to keep most of the time half the pool open only due to the very strict laws for lifeguards ratio. However since our pool is extremely large, there is still plenty of room to play!

Thank you again for your feedback!
