“A truly unique experience...not a modern luxury hotel...a matter of expectations.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012 via mobile

The hotel is a throwback to the vacations of times past, when families would travel to hotels on lakes for fresh air and water activities, the type of vacations that made Lake George famous. Remember the movie "Dirty Dancing"? The Montebello is a reminder of those days, updated just enough to keep its own head above water.

The buildings are truly unique. How often will you be able to sleep in a log cabin that is more akin to a Chateau? the lobby is exceptional. It is a massive log construction area, with a huge central stone fireplace.

But this is more of an experience than a luxury stay. It speaks heritage. The grounds are large and attractive, offering nice walks and many activities, both on-site and off. As such, it will no doubt be enjoyable for many.

However, the hotel is not the same level of luxury as you might expect given the Fairmont name and the prices. If you want modernized, comfortable rooms, with large, updated bathroom facilities, you will be disappointed. If you like bright public areas, including hallways, you will be disappointed. The wood is dark brown and the colours tend to be somber.

So, it's a matter of expectations. Some will love it, others will be disappointed.

As for service, I have stayed there on business over the years and have rarely been impressed with the service. This last visit was quite different. The front desk staff were very pleasant and helpful.

For business meetings, the owners have invested in a modern conference centre. It is a large and user-friendly area. It has improved tremendously, and has become a very good choice for business meetings. Given that the hotel is in the country, the location helps keep attendees in attendance!

It's a beautiful old building with a spectacular lobby but it's been allowed to become a bit threadbare. The grounds are expansive and have all the usual resort hotel and spa activities. All-in-all a very relaxing place for a quiet, short and local vacation. Expect to pay at least the cost of your room per day in activity fees, bar tabs and restaurant bills. The staff is long term, professional and "correct", but not overly warm. A stay much longer than five days is not recommended as the restaurant menu, while good, quickly becomes exhausted. Make the trip to Kenauk for fishing, canoeing and shooting but don't arrive early, the staff starts late. Also, if you've rented a boat, bring your own trolling motor and bailing pump. The staff will not bail-out last nights rainfall for you. That said, the sporting clay range and the fishing is very good. The Stanley Thomson course is reasonably well maintained and worth a round or two. Avoid staying at the hotel during Quebec Construction holiday. The tone of the place becomes more Cancun than Fairmont. Be careful to specify an athletic massage if receiving a massage, otherwise it will be too gentle.

Dear Spirochaetes,

I truly appreciate your feedback, and I am pleased to say that we have numerous capital projects in place to improve our unique building, that you noted as ''been allowed to become a bit threadbare''. We have been putting a lot of money in infrastructure, and in the coming years we are investing more in the esthetics, and I am really glad about this!

I appreciate your honest feedback about your experience and it allows me to work with my team to improve, so thank you.

We look forward to welcoming you again at the Fairmont Le Château Montebello!

As stated, huge log hotel. Grounds and lodge very unique. My kids all want to go back and stay there. Inside the lobby area is a sight to see. Seemed like they had a lot of activities to do. Doesn't seem like a whole lot to do in the area outside Parc Omega and couple points of interest in town. Lots of outdoor sitting areas with spots to purchase food and drinks. If your looking for a nice quite place to relax and settle down, this would be it. A good book in a chair along the river. Our 2 hours there was plenty and that included walking up to the historic house that sits just past the pool and horses.

The hotel and property is absolutely charming, a part of Quebec history. The property offers plenty of activities such as squash, canoeing, kayaking, jet skiing, amazing indoor and outdoor pool (although it was too cold to use the pool during our stay), walking/running trails etc... I found the prices correct considering the size of the property, the outstanding service and experience. The grounds are beautifully maintained. The staff was amazing. Bring a lunch and have a picnic, there are many little secluded areas to share a picnic with beautiful views of the Outaouais river.

We had dinner at the restaurant Chatignoles and it was fabulous. We ordered from the Seigneurie menu and every dish was bursting with delicious flavors, combined with good service, I would say the restaurant is a must.
Relax with a drink in the lobby which is adorned with an impressive fireplace in the center, wood ceilings and stain glass, cozy furniture and game tables. This hotel is extremely romantic.
Our room had a beautiful river view and a super comfortable bed.
I look forward to going back and staying longer -)

A really interesting building and lovely grounds but the service and the rooms let it down, certainly when aligned with the price and the blurb about the place. The service was ok but not special and the lobby bar was notable for the lack of warmth and slow speed of service. The room was completely functional but dated in terms of decor and the bathroom was tiny. Paying CAD14 for wifi on top the cost of the room really annoyed me.

We spend one night at the Chateau Montebello in august 2012. The grounds are well kept, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the food is very good, but it is not worth the price. Beer and wine is very expensive, so be careful... Service is amazing.

When booking at an expensive, well-established brand hotel, one expects not only great amenities, but also spectacular service that makes one feel wanted and welcomed.  Unfortunately, during this visit, we only experienced the former and not the latter.

The first person(s) you see when arriving on-site can make or break your experience/opinion of a business (whether that is the hostess of a restaurant, the admin of a doctor's office, or the bellman / front desk of a hotel).  In our case, the bellman / front desk failed and actually set the tone of service for our entire visit (not a positive).  Below I will get into The Bad, but first I will cover The Good.

The Good:
- room was large, airy and bright (we paid for an upgraded room - 219).  It was actually the room the George W. Bush slept in during the 2007 NAFTA Summit.
- the children's buffet at dinner is a smart idea.  Basically, there is a buffet of hot and cold foods ranging from the typical burger and fries to make your own chicken and rice fajitas.  As well, fresh fruit, veggies, salads, desserts.  Even the pickiest of eaters can find something there!
- there is lots to do on the grounds: swimming in the outdoor and indoor pools, golf, tennis, outdoor basketball, mini-putt, small children's play ground, horseback riding, etc.
- great history, just wished there was more info around the resort (read lots on Wikipedia)

The Bad:
- the bellman greeted us, but it was not until WE removed our bags from our vehicle did he load them onto a trolly and told us where reception was.
- there were three people working at reception, but only two seemed to be actually working.  We stood there for 20min before being acknowledge (never mind being helped)
- reception confirmed the champagne we ordered through the conceirge (and was confirmed by the conceirge in email) was already in our room... it was not.
- there are crayons and coloring books at reception, but our toddler was not offered any (only discovered this while waiting to checkout as we were offered this while sitting on the couch in the lobby)
- we were not informed the various amenities on the property (most front desk people give a brief overview of what is where during checkin)
- after wandering the property for TWO hours, we went to our room to get a change of clothes, but our bags still were NOT delivered (nor was the champagne).  I went to the front desk... the gentleman working said it was up to me to tell the bellman what room to deliver the bags (huh?) AND my champagne "was on the way".  First of all, we were never told we had to do this (not by the bellman nor by the front desk).  Secondly, I have never been to a hotel where a bellman takes your bags, but it's up to you to go back to the bellman once you check in at reception.  Strange process, especially for a Fairmont.
- our champagne never arrived
- very small and dated bathroom (but is was clean)
- burnt out light bulbs in the bathroom
- dinner was very expensive for the value and service.  The food was ok, but for $200+ for two people, it was not that great.  The service was ok, but not overly friendly.
- service for the breakfast buffet was lacking.  The server wasn't really there to proactively serve or assist, let alone be friendly  - she was just hanging out in the background coming when you could get her attention.  We had to ask several times for our coffee to to refilled (most hotel restaurants put a small coffee pot per person on your table), we also had to clear / stack our used plates when we went to get another plate of food, etc.

When I come to think about it, none of the staff was overly friendly or outgoing.  It was strange.

I did end up speaking with the assistant manager due to the champagne and chocolates that were pre-ordered, but never arrived.  My spouse had planned this great weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday and there was a lot of letdown.  The assistant manager did reduce our bill by $100 and offered us to come back (on our dime) and should an upgrade room be available, he would upgrade us for free of charge...

... the problem is that the hotel is basically asking us to spend more money so they can demonstrate that the hotel can indeed provide great service.  Ummm, they should have showed me great service in the first place.

Dear Bifford,
Thank you for your constructive feedback regarding your stay with us. I wish I can do something to go back in time and change the scenario and turn it into wonderful memories... Nevertheless, customer service is very important for me and I have taken it personally to do a very thorough follow-up with all team members involved to ensure that this does not repeat in the future.

I sure hope we will have the opportunity to redeem ourselves to offer you a memorable experience for the right reasons.
