I've been wanting to write this review for quite some time, but was confused since it wasn't on the list of cities/areas listed on the site. Now that I have finally figured out how to do it (I think), I am happy to write the first review of a superb bed and breakfast we found in the Mauricie region of Quebec.
First of all, this area definitely is off the "tourist track" for U.S. visitors to Quebec. It seems most Americans take the most direct highway from Montreal to Quebec City. Since we wanted to visit the Saguenay Fjord, we decided to go from Trois Rivieres up through the Mauricie region. This made La Tuque the perfect town to stop for the night.
La Maison Claire-Fontaine is a lovely bed and breakfast home with reasonable rates. The rooms are charming and clean as can be. There are 5 bedrooms. We stayed in La St-Maurice, which had a small private bathroom and a huge tub on one side of the main room. I believe the other rooms have a sink in the room, but share shower and toilet facilities. Marie-Josee and Eddy were the most gracious hosts. In case your French isn't very good, Eddy speaks English very fluently, and Marie-Josee's English is better than she thinks (but I also loved hearing their French). She prepared a very eye-appealing and delicious breakfast. There is a separate area beside the house with a hot tub. After using it, Eddy offered to dry our swimsuits for us. There were three of us (my husband, daughter, and myself) and La St-Maurice had a sleep sofa, so my daughter slept on it.
The only thing I would do different, since it was a little crowded and the tub was not private, the next time I would just go ahead and get a separate smaller room for our teenage daughter. We were hesitant to do that when we made the reservation, but after seeing the arrangement of the rooms and bath facilities, and with their reasonable rates, we would feel totally comfortable doing that. We did glance into two other unoccupied rooms -- they were very nice.
The next day, we took the route north to the Saguenay area, spent a couple of nights there, then headed to Quebec City. If you have a few days extra and want to see sites, like I said, "off the beaten path," I highly recommend this. The bed and breakfast would also be an excellent choice for business travelers.
Oh, by the way, I accidentally left behind a necklace in our room at La Maison Claire-Fontaine. In our conversations, we had mentioned where we would be staying the following night. Not long after we arrived there, I received a phone call from Marie-Josee and Eddy telling me that they had found my necklace and would mail it to me. How's that for honesty! We would love to go back to the Mauricie region and spend some more time there as we found it very appealing. When we do return, we will definitely be staying at La Maison Claire-Fontaine!
