Goodness knows why TA selected these rating gradations!

We had afternoon tea, something the kids had never done. It is a beautiful grand old hotel. The tea itself was quite good, with lots of varieties, and served in a selection of charming cups and saucers. The fruit was very nice, and most of the baked goods were, too. Finger sandwiches were okay. We also go a cheese and meat platter, which disappointed. It may be a Canadian thing but the meats looked Oscar-Mayer-ish to me.

For the price, probably a disappointment. But still had some redeeming qualities and we were glad we went.

We arrived shortly before the lunch hour and were seated in the lovely room next to the restaurant by a warm fire in the welcoming stone fireplace. The coffee and service were perfect and just being in the inn was an experience. It is positively lovely. The semi circular dining room, lined with windows looking out onto the pond and the sea, is nothing short of splendid and we could only imagine having dinner there by candlelight. I was sorry to read other reviews of spotty service and questionable fare but our lunch there was wonderful albeit a little slow in coming to the table. We happened by in September when there had been some changeover in staff as many who work there in the summertime go back to school in the fall, but even though our burgers were rather slow in coming, they were delicious and I couldn't fault the meal at all in any other regard. Dalvay itself is worth the trip and just being there in this wonderful inn is worth stopping by for a meal.

Lunch at the Dalvay on a rainy, windy day was a great respite from the weather. The food was excellent, the service very good and the hotel was a must-see on PEI. We understand that others have had different experiences but ours was very good in every respect.

Having enjoyed the beautiful setting, friendly service, and wonderful dining experiences at this hotel for over 20 years, it is sad to see what it is today. After disappointing meals last summer, we were willing to give it another try this year. Bad decision! Sunday lunch, in a diningroom with only 6 other guests, was a culinary disaster. Drinks arrived and orders taken within 10 minutes - pleasant waiter. After a wait of 50 minutes, I requested at least a roll or bread to nibble on. The embarrassed reply, "they are being thawed". Exactly one hour and five minutes after sitting down, the meal arrived. The Dalvay Burger was dry and served with a plate-filling pile of French fries (the menu indicated Market Greens); the Crunchy Fish was overcooked and tasteless, also accompanied by the unwanted French fries. Neither bread nor rolls ever did appear.

This diningroom is now frequented only by the unwary visitor from-away, and deservedly so. It is highly over-rated and vastly over-priced.

Start at Brackley Beach and take a scenic bike ride over to Dalvay-by-the-sea! Grab a drink and something to eat or just relax out front on the chairs. Makes for a great day!
