“Great getaway for 4 friends”
Reviewed March 4, 2012

I must apologize for my very late review, but I thought...better late then never right? We were 4 women and 1 very little girl (under 1 year) that needed a place to stay while touring in PEC. When we looked around it seemed that many of the B&Bs were geared towards couples and a few wouldn't accomodate children, so when I came across Newsroom Suites, I thought we were saved! The Newsroom suites was a gem of a place to stay. Since we were travelling during the off-season, it took quite a few attempts before getting a hold of Kathleen, but once we connected, it all went smoothly from there. The location worked very well for us being closer to some of the better wineries in PEC. Not to mention we were right across the street from a really great restaurant (East and Main Bistro).

The room set up was truly perfect for us. Between the 5 of us, we shared both of the suites thereby having the place litterally to ourselves. There is a den in each suite with a pull-out sofabed and doors for privacy which allowed us all to have our own bedroom. The main bedroom was very spacious. The bath was quite pretty. Each suite also has it's own kitchenette stocked with some thoughtful amenities such as coffee beans, a grinder and coffee maker which was perfect for a fresh cup in the AM. We had everything we wanted to complete our two night stay. Breakfast was not included with our stay, but there was an amazing place walking distance away called Tall Poppy Cafe - we had our breakfast there both mornings.

Thanks to Kathleen for being so helpful with our questions and more than understanding when our youngest member of the group had a small spill.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone - but especially for a girlfriend getaway!

Although more expensive than basic rooms at Angeline's Inn, Newsroom Suites is on par with pricing at Huff Estates, and far easier to get reservations than anywhere else on a summer weekend in the County. The owner, Kathleen, is a newspaper photographer in the newspaper office below the 2 one-bedroom one-bathroom suites available for nightly rental (2-night minimum on summer weekends). Kitchenette contains small fridge with tiny freezer compartment, microwave, french press, kettle, coffee beans, fresh milk and cream, tea, and all the cutlery, knives, plates, mugs, etc. needed to feel right at home making your own breakfast or lunch. There are 2 TVs, a pull-out sofa in the small living room, and a good King-size bed in the separate bedroom overlooking the main street in the tiny town of Wellington. Beach towels, DVDs such as Avatar and novels by Canadian authors are provided.

The Suites are ideally located, across the street from East & Main restaurant, next to Foodland grocery store, down the street from Tall Poppy Cafe. It is also a short 10-15 minute drive to the Hillier area wineries such as Rose Hall Run, Norm Hardie (with spectacular wood-oven pizza lunches on weekends) and Casa Dea (with an Italian restaurant on site). The Suites are also close to the village of Bloomfield with amazing dining (Angeline's and Bloomfield Carriage House and its Marshmallow Room bakery) and Slickers ice cream. It's also on the same side of the County as gorgeous ocean-like Sandbanks provincial park beach ($16.00 admission fee). To get to Waupoos or Fifth Town dairy area, it does take about 45 minutes to cross the County by car. Word of warning: all decent non-winery restaurants close by 9 pm even on weekends unless you only want a drink after that time.

Unfortunately, sound travels quite well since it's an older house (though completely renovated) -- you will be able to hear the main entrance door as well as the newspaper office door open and close firmly below. We could also sometimes hear the family in the other suite (e.g. child talking loudly, or when they were on the stairs leaving/returning) and the vacuum (and their loud voices) when Kathleen's family cleaned the other suite upon its vacancy. But even so, Newsroom Suites provides significantly more privacy for couples looking for a romantic getaway, than any conventional B&B or hotels where bedrooms share common walls. At Newsroom the 2 suites are separated by a stairwell and foyer hallway so there are no common walls.

Room Tip: Both suites are identical but try asking for the one that is NOT above the newspaper main office to...

The Newsroom Suites offers fabulous accommodations unlike anything else in Prince Edward County. The rooms are modern, clean, comfortable, and have tonnes of character. They are full of hidden surprises. You'll find a warm blanket by your feet in the den to cuddle under while watching movies, and a pair of Egyptian cotton beach towels in the bedroom closet for a trip to the nearby sand dunes. The kitchenette is large and fully stocked. The bathroom is full of beautiful stone and high-end fixtures. The decor is modern and tasteful and you don't feel like you’re staying over at Grandma's, which is the last thing we wanted. The suites are above a working newsroom and not in the owner's home, which means you have the place to yourself after business hours. It makes a world of difference when you don't have to worry about noise levels or share the t.v. room with the proprietor, things that are par for the course at most B&Bs. If we find ourselves back in Prince Edward County, the Newsroom Suites will be our first choice for accommodation.

We stayed at the Newsroom Suites while attending a family wedding in Wellington. The Suites (there are two) are just beautiful, and Kathleen and Rick have thought of every detail--down to the french press and coffee grinder. The suites are very spacious, with two televisions and dvd players, comfortable beds, kitchenette, and friendly hosts who are just a phone call away if anything is needed. The location is quite convenient, right next to the grocery store, and walking distance to local restaurants, galleries, and shops. The lake is just a couple of blocks away, a really spectacular place to watch the sun set. We loved the Newsroom Suites and wished we could stay longer!

Room Tip: There are only two suites available, so book early.

First, Wellington: this town is a great hub for any trip to PEC, especially those seeking wine. Many wineries are within a few minutes' drive (including two of our favourites, Norman Hardie and Keint-He, as well as Casa-Dea, Rosehall Run, Sandbanks and others), the lake shore is just down the hill and Bloomfield is only a few minutes away.

Second, the location: atop a working local newspaper room and sitting right on Main Street, literally across the street from East & Main (consensus pick for best restaurant in the area), next door to a grocery store and near lots of small shops and the excellent Tall Poppy Cafe. Parking is free, and right in front of the building.

Third, the suite itself: not your average tiny B&B room. The suite we were in (I'm not sure whether there's more than one?) was four rooms: a large bedroom; a den with couch, desk, TV and DVD; a kitchenette stocked with dishes, utensils, glasses and corkscrews, not to mention bar fridge, microwave and coffee maker; and a large bathroom with tub, shower and double sink. This was less a hotel room and more a decent-sized apartment, and nicely decorated too...old typewriters and Canadian literate were nice touches given the nature of the building.

I'd highly recommend staying here...spacious and comfortable suite, great location and a nice alternative to the same old flowery preciousness of all the other B&Bs in the area. Only slightly weird thing was that when business hours end at the office downstairs there's no one left in the building. However, the manager's only a phone call away, and frankly it's nice not to worry about making noise when coming home late or turning on the TV too early in the morning the way you do in a typical B&B.
