On our recent trip to Niagara Falls continuing with a drive around Lake Ontario, we spent one very enjoyable night at the Waddell. Located in a restored 19th century building on the banks of the Ganaraska River in downtown Port Hope, it offers large guest rooms on the second and third floors with a lobby and a charming Italian restaurant on the first. The hotel has an elevator for convenient transport of luggage to the upper floors. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. Our air conditioned room had high ceilings, two beds, an armoire, 2 wing chairs, 2 other chairs, a desk and chair, TV, and a pot for heating water for the instant coffee provided that was surprisingly good. And with all that, the room was not crowded. The bath, though a bit small, was entirely adequate. The only downside was that the hotel is right on the street, and our corner room was rather noisy. Either one motorcycle chose to drive round and round much of the night or multiple bikes rode through town, but either way, this made for a noisy evening! Others in our party had rooms which faced the river and they did not have this problem.

The small town of Port Hope is attractive, and a short walk will take you either into the quaint downtown area or to the shores of Lake Ontario with the Canadian Firefighters Museum near the harbor. Though there are other options, the Waddell, while slightly more expensive, seems to be by far the best choice for lodging in the Port Hope area.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river are the quietest.

I just stayed here while visiting a friend in Port Hope. The location is great because it's in the town centre and you can easily walk to shops, restaurants and bars. Note that parking in their lot is limited, so you might have to park on the street, but given the size of Port Hope, this really isn't a big deal. The service at the front desk is fantastic. I ended up staying in a large room with 2 queen size beds, which was well decorated and had everything that I needed. The bathroom was very clean and large, which surprised me a bit given the size and age of the Waddell. The only downside really is that the older windows means that a lot of street noise enters the room over night. On a Saturday night, this can result in listening to people pouring out of the local bars after midnight, but again, it's Port Hope so the numbers of them are not great. Still, bear that in mind if you are a light sleeper. Despite the loudness, I would highly recommend people visiting the area stay here.

This hotel was recommended by our now daughter-in-law because she and our son were getting married in the Port Hope area. We took over most rooms and we all had a wonderful stay. The staff were very accommodating in our needs and we received early check-ins and late check-outs. The rooms were quite spacious and the beds were so comfortable. The Waddell is located beside the river and the views are lovely. We will definitely return for a romantic weekend in the fall when we can use the fireplace,

We showed up for dinner to a very cold reception. From the moment we arrived we were treated like a nuissance. I was very disappointed by how poor the service was. The waitress brought out the wrong meal for one of us and expected us to just take it -- even though it was clearly her error. She also brought out fish that was undercooked and told me that I should just eat it. It was very brutal. I wouldn't bother going here -- just go somewhere else.

We stayed at The Waddell while attending the town's Vintage Film Festival. We arrived late after a long drive from Ottawa. As mentioned in other reviews, the front desk was closed but a friendly waiter at the adjoining restaurant checked us in with no problems. There is an elevator in the old, three-storey brick building in the centre of town, but it's a bit slow so when we weren't hauling our luggage, we took the stairs.
Room 304 was really nice - and huge. The main room features high ceilings, a queen-sized four-poster bed, two desks, a large flat screen TV inside a wardrobe, several lamps, an electric fireplace, two wing-backed chairs, several other chairs, a coffee table and two bedside tables. There were several large windows overlooking the street on one side and the river on the other. I appreciated the many lamps, as I think lighting makes or breaks a room. The room is nicely designed, with a good mix of modern decor, antiques and neutral paint tones.

They also provided bottled water at no extra charge.

The bathroom is okay. The products are nice but the shower head was all cockeyed and sprayed everywhere and I thought the counter top was a little cheap when compared to the rest of the room. Nice quality towels.

I must say though, that at $200/night, I was surprised the bed had cheap sheets, a thin synthetic blanket and only two pillows. Frankly, this is the kind of place where I expected nice sheets, at least two pillows each and a duvet. We requested two more pillows in the morning. Still, the bed was comfortable and we slept well on the second night, once we got the extra pillows.

Breakfast is included with the room and it's not a boring old Continental breakfast either. The eggs, toast and hashbrowns were delicious. You may also get a different breakfast and pay the difference, which works out to be about $2 or $3. One morning I upgraded to eggs Benedict and my partner had fruit and granola - it was all delicious. The dining room/restaurant is beautiful...nice wood floors, charming decorations and windows overlooking the river. THere is also a nice patio that even at the end of October, was being used by people crowded around one of those gas heaters.

We didn't eat dinner there but we did have a few glasses of wine at the bar opposite the dining room and it was really cosy.

On checkout, they gave us someone else's paperwork.

We will definitely return.

Lacking real care of a caring owner/manager. Felt on my own, nobody really seemed to care. Seemed like a locked fortress when I arrived Sunday to a dark uninhabited building. Monday was not much better, restaurant finally opened up on Tuesday. The rooms are great and food fabulous. They would not play a hockey playoff game on TV in the Bar, they did not want to have that sort of atmosphere. I had to leave to watch the game at another establishment!

All in all great place, just not sure they really get it.

Room Tip: Ask for the 01 balconies are great!

The first impression at the front desk lacked warmth and professionalism. We were greeted with "I don't see a reservation in your name and we're fully booked" to which we replied that according to our confirmation the room had been booked months prior for an in town wedding that day. After another look, our reservation was found and we made our way to a lovely spacious room with many windows and a fireplace. Unfortunately the light was not working in the room entrance, in front of the closet. We saw a maid in the hall and asked if it could be replaced - her reply was - "is that still burnt out?, I'll get a new bulb." When we came back from lunch in the hotel restaurant (which was very good - menu offered a nice variety of dishes and the service was friendly) the maid was having some difficulties replacing the light in our room so my husband climbed the ladder and after testing several bulbs got it to work.
When we were ready to go to the wedding venue we stopped at the front desk to ask if they could call us a cab, which they did then explaining it would take 45 min to an hour because there were only 2 cabs!! (we allowed ourselves 30 minutes, knowing that the venue was not far away (a reason why we checked into this hotel!) We made the wedding on time, just a little stressed. I would have appreciated if the front desk had told us about the cab situation when we checked in...they knew we would be needing one!
To end on a positive note, we returned after the bar had closed but while staff were still there. We asked if we could have a night cap and while we couldn't stay in the bar they gave us two drinks to go...to our room.
Breakfast was delicious, and the wait staff friendly.
If they could work at improving their reception skills this would be a ***** star rating!
