“Certain to exceed your B & B expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2012

Talwood Manor is set in a quiet neighbourhood and this understated turn of the century home has to be one of Port Colbornes best kept secrets. Adequate parking is provided off of the street at the back of house, and it gave us the opportunity to envision how beautiful the gardens must be in warmer weather.

Upon entering the home, we were greeted by Judith and pleasantly surprised by the grandiose decorations that made us realize that we had made an excellent decision to stay at “the manor.” Holiday decorations started in the porch area and spilled into the airy front room, and the fireplace in the sitting area as well as the grandfather clock made it feel cozy.

Attention to the smallest details is what made our stay so special. On the 2nd floor there is a small beverage area at the top of the stairs, which is fully stocked with tea, coffee and cold drinks. During our stay Judith ensured that our needs were more then met and we were made aware of activities available in Port Colborne.

Any one of the four rooms that we had to choose from would have been more then adequate. My spouse and I stayed in The Highlander which perfectly describes the décor of this spacious room with an ensuite bathroom. The tartan pattern of the bedspread is accented by the balance of new and era furniture pieces.

The breakfast table was set in holiday colours and the pleasant conversation with our hostess as well as the care that went into breakfast made us feel like royalty. All the accommodations certainly exceeded our expectations.
Well done Judith, we will be seeing you again.

Room Tip: All four rooms are excellent and named appropriately for their decor, bedsize may be a deciding fac...

Stayed as part of a wedding party with my wife for 2 nights in the Highlander Suite. The home is decorated incredibly well for each season of the year, and the rooms are fantastic. Our breakfast was delicious and Judith was able to accommodate for my Gluten intolerance for each meal!
Additionally, I agree with all statements in the previous review by katymary45!

Together with my husband, son and daughter-in-law, we were on a nostalgic visit to Port Colborne as my aunt used to live on Steele Street, and we had stayed many times in Port - the last being 12 years ago. We decided on B & B for this visit and so stayed at Talwood Manor from the 1st - 4th August whilst we revisited old haunts and met up with a couple of old friends.
Talwood Manor is a large house on Fielden and looks quite unpretentious from the outside, with large gardens, parking area for car, and separate entrance to the house for guests.
Inside, it is like entering another world. Judith is a lovely hostess who made us all feel very welcome and showed her B & B off with pride, as well she should. The reception and dining area of this home is delightfully and tastefully furnished in Regency style, highly polished, dark wood furniture, with beautifully upholstered settee and chairs in the former, and very elegant dining table and chairs in the latter. There are glass cabinets holding china, and a very grand grandfather clock against one of the walls, and it chimes too. There was a little library with leather chairs and bookshelves with all kinds of books availble, which you are free to use during your stay. On the upstairs hall landing, there is a fridge with wate, milkr and soft drinks in it. There was also 2-3 cans of beer. A coffee maker and electric kettle for making tea are available, with coffee, tea bags. sugar, biscuits, cups and saucers, glasses.
Judith has four guest bedrooms, 2 with ensuite bathrooms and the other two with shared bathroom. Our son and daughter-in-law had the Tudor suite with its own bathroom. This room was awesome with an enormous 4poster bed (very, very comfortable) , draped in tudor design soft furnishings. The room was dressed as of the Tudor period with wallhangings and a large print of HenryVIII. There was a little enclosed verandah off this room, which had a table (with wine glasses) and two chairs with footstools - and here you could sit out in the evening with a glass of wine. Absolutely charming. The 21stC look was the television. Large bathroom with free-standing and enormous clawfoot bath, separate shower and dressing table. There was a walk-in closet for hanging clothes.
We had the HIghlander suite which also had its own bathroom. The bedding in this room was dressed in soft tartans which was very attractive. There was a very large dresser with mirror, a small oval table (with wine glasses) with two chairs, and a small cupboard with a hanging rail for small items and where cases could be stored. There was a wallrail for hanging longer items. A print of a shepherd with sheep in a highland setting hung on on eof the walls - and on the dresser was a standing print of the 14th C Declaration of Arbroath - which all Scots would definately appreciate seeing there. The ensuite bathroom had a large shower, washhand basin and toilet and a rather imaginative touch of an upholstered, roll-sided stool with a white sheepskin rug draped over it. Now this worked! There was also a glass fronted cabinet in here with towels of heathery hues, rolled up, but ready for use as required by the guests. A very comfortable suite.
The other two rooms were also themed - tropical and asian respectively - and were beautifully done too. The shared bathroom was enormous, in black and white, with a large and attractive print (black on white) of Don Quixote. Altogether these rooms made up for more comfortable living.
However, all of the above notwithstanding, it was Judith, and the two members of staff that we met, viz Helen and Robyn, who really made our stay so successful and enjoyable. The dining room table was always so beautifully and so regally set for breakfast in the morning, that you could imagine some Royal personage was going to pop in and sit down with the guests. Damask table settings and napkins, stylish cutlery, little individual crystal butter dishes (covered too) at each setting, crystal salt and pepper cruets, tiny little silver swans at each setting for the main knife to rest on, individual butter knives, a set of jam and preserve spoons on their own little plate, I could go on and on.
Every morning fresh fruit was provided, orange juice, cerial et copious amounts of freshly brewed coffee or tea, breads and jams and preserves. Judith is an excellent cook so asparagus omelette was on offer, as was eggs benedict, scrambled eggs with smoked salmon but really you could have had anything cooked that you wanted and it would be served to you on the table in warmed chafing dishes - so elegant!
All in all this was a very enjoyable experience, and we all felt so pampered and royally spoiled by Judith. Before we left Port Colborne, I visited the Visitors' Information Centre down at lock 8 and told them about our stay at Talwood Manor and how much we had appreciated the care and attention given to us by Judith (and Helen and Robyn) . So for those of you who read reviews prior to visits and are looking for somewhere to stay in Port Colborne - we would very highly recommend this B & B - you won't regret it.
