“delicious, thoughtful eats in a lovely old building”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

We dropped in for a quick light lunch on a holiday weekend Sunday, calling ahead the day before to reserve, because it is always packed. The draft beer selection is legendary (20 options), all from small breweries across Canada as well as Belgium, Germany, Britain. The pulled duck taco (with pickled veg, heaps of fresh cilantro and a sweet chili sauce) was terrific. Even better was the escargots and mushrooms in a creamy wine sauce over baguette toast. Highly recommended.

“Some good things”
Reviewed June 26, 2014 via mobile

Arrived in Bayfield & checked out places to eat - this place rated as #2. Was expecting a hidden treasure. Had the fresh pea soup & salt & pepper calamari. Soup was excellent, light & very flavourful. Calamari so so but receipe needs a re-fresh. My partner had the village salad - fresh & tasty but dressing needs a little more zip.The fish & chip- fresh fish but average chips. Uneven. Could be improved. Service good.

“Great selection of premium beers”
Reviewed June 21, 2014 via mobile

Stopped in for a few drinks and ended up eating a bit while here. They have a huge selection of draft beers (25 I think) and even more bottled beers. We had the cheese tray appetizer for $20 but was worth it! Three different cheeses, chutney and crackers. We have been here twice now and have not been disappointed. I'd recommend this place any day.

“Black Dog Knows How to Cook Fish”
Reviewed June 14, 2014

We have eaten here several times for lunch, and food is always great. But most recently went for dinner and it was delicious. First make a reservation. This place is BUSY. We had the fish and chips and the rainbow trout. Both dishes were cooked to perfection. Service was very good considering the crowd. Love the atmosphere in here.

“The whole menu is amazing!”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Bayfield is a lovely little town on Lake Huron. A little like Niagara-on-the-Lake without the huge crowds and a little more laid back. The Black Dog Bistro sits across from the town Square in a great location with charming patio and roomy indoor seating. This was our first visit. The menu posted outside looked really good so we went in.

Between the four of us we had:
a super caesar salad
a tasty beet/goat's cheese salad on a generous arugula base
a gravalax on warm potato salad
mushroom and brie broiled onto thick coat fresh bread toasts
duck confit taco's
pork belly taco
Scotch Egg with spicy tomato relish
Scotland Burger with blue cheese and onion rings

Each of these items was a small plate (apart from the burger) but the salads were generously sized if not American "climbable" sized. What linked them all was a creativity, flair and layering of flavours that made them most satisfying. Overall the menu was amazing. 6-8 burgers, 8-10 apps and small plates and another 8 entrees, all of them looked really appetizing. I think I could have picked any at random and been happy!

We never saw the dessert menu but I'm sure it was similarly awesome but if not, there is a great fro-yo & ice cream place across the street.

Did I mention they have a dozen beers on tap (some really interesting) and another 20+ in bottles and a pretty good wine list too? We walked out of the Black Dog totally sated and happy. Price was very reasonable for such a stunning meal. Do yourself a favour a take a very pleasant drive in the country this summer and have a lunch you will look forward to repeating.
