Captain George's Fish & Chips in Aurora has a Wellington St E address, but does NOT face onto the street. Instead, this fish & chip restaurant is one of three or four other businesses tucked into the side of the building, facing the parking lot shared with the Canada Trust TD Bank on the corner of Yonge St and Wellington St.... a location potentially sub-optimal for attracting new customers. To overcome this, there are a multitude of signs highly visible both from Wellington St E and from Yonge St advertising both the restaurant and the all-day special... Haddock and Chips for $6.75. That was certainly enough to get my attention for a quick lunch.
The restaurant size is what one would expect from a Fish & Chip's restaurant... three banks of three tables, each seating four people. Clean, brightly lit. Friendly service. The all daily special really is a great value. The haddock portion was large; the traditional English style batter coating was crisp and relatively thin... not at all what one often gets at other Fish & Chip shops, thick battering hiding a small piece of fish. The chips (french fries) were not memorable but good enough.
The menu features a choice of haddock, halibut and cod. There are a number of family size portions available both for dining in and of course for take-out, all attractively priced. The most expensive single menu item was the Captain George's Special: fish & chips, scallops, shrimp, onion rings, garden salad for $20.95 Sure looked like a great deal if/when I get my wife to return with me for a casual dinner. Other menu items include: chicken fingers Greek, Caesar and garden salads; the omnipresent Canadian obsession poutine; chicken on a bun; various desserts; and yes, sweet potato fries. No hamburgers... go elsewhere if you absolutely must have a hamburger.
Bottom line... better than average fish & chips restaurant compared to other similar fish & chips experiences, based on food, ambiance and value.
NOTE: After enjoying my meal I discovered on the internet that Captain George's Fish & Chips is a chain restaurant. That did not in any way diminish my satisfactory experience. I found a web site which I initially thought was the chain wide site... turned out to be the site for Captain George's Whitby, ON location and has different, higher pricing. Could be that the current Aurora pricing is introductory pricing? In my opinion, if/when the prices are in the future moderately raised, still good value for quality. In the meantime, enjoy the even better current value.
