“Pleasant Staff, Tasty Food, Fluorescent Lights”
Reviewed November 26, 2012

The first thing you notice about Valentino's Ristorante in Mahone Bay is the great heritage house in which it is found, right on the main street. The second thing is the pleasant reception and care of the staff and owner/chef for your needs. The owner's son showed great poise for a teenager and the whole staff was friendly. Chef came to our table during the meal to see that we were satisfied with his creations -- and we were. Our server had seveal creations to describe that were not on the menu -- all sounded great -- and a couple of exclusions since we were not only in the off season for tourism, but also for lobster in that part of Nova Scotia.

My wife and I can rarely eat a 3-4 course dinner anymore, so we only ordered a main each. The problem with that is that since the garlic bread comes with the main dishes, we had nothing to munch on during the preparation time. The menu warns that due to making each dish to order, there is a wait time to get your meal -- but without anything, even bread, we were sitting for a long time with only water (and eventually a glass of wine). Many Italian restaurants provide olives and other tidbits to whet the appetite and this restaurant, using authentic Italian recipes, would benefit from copying that tradition as well.

The veal marsala that I had was very tender and accompanied by a medley of veggies and nicely done herb potatoes (the latter coming with most meals). My wife ordered the haddock which she said tasted fried in oil and she prefers butter. But the fish was properly cooked and flaky.

The worst aspect of this restaurant, which might work at lunch but does not at dinner, is that the lighting is provided by indirect fluorescent bulbs. The candle on our table was useless as the brightness of the overhead light overpowered any warmth of the candlelight and the Christmas decorations that were tastefully placed around the room. My wife almost offered to offer a consultation on lighting for them! What could have been an intimate setting since there were several rooms and not too many tables in each felt quite stark and cold.

“"Not a taste bud left unstimulated!"”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

It was quite by accident we happened to dine at Valentino's. A gracious welcome by Joanne set the mood for our dining experience and listening to her describe the evening specials enhanced the atmosphere with her excellent use of Italian. Val did a spectacular job with his "creations" and now I know why a friend of mine only uses homemade pasta...wow!
The food was excellent..not heavy but heavenly! Their house red was light enough to compliment our chicken fettucini and tiger shrimp spaghetti.
We also like the idea of bringing your own NSLC wine (corking fee is reasonable). They only have Italian wine (of course) but sometimes we enjoy another red with our pasta. We will put that in our memory bank for another time! Our meal was reasonably priced for the quality and yes, quanity!
Go, relax, enjoy great conversation, great food and ...
"welcome to the family!" ;)

“Great Italian Food”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

The previous reviews of Valentino's Restorante were "right on" concerning the quality of the meals. I had some reservations about eating Italian rather than seafood, but my reservations were ill founded. The food was great, the homemade pasta was excellent. The service was exceptional and the atmosphere was warm and friendly.

“good Italian food in Mahone Bay”
Reviewed October 1, 2012

Very traditional Italian restaurant - food lovingly prepared and served. The helpings are fairly large and my husband and I found that one of us ordered a main course and the other a salad and that was quite sufficient.
