“Nice Diversion”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2009

When looking for activities near Baddeck, Sydney or Louisbourg, Highland Village is a nice way to spend and hour or two. All buildings were moved to the site from other areas of Cape Breton. The costumed interpreters were interesting and knowledgeable.

“re-living the past”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2008

The Highland Village ("An Clachan Gaidhealach" in the Gaelic!) sits on the hillside overlooking Iona. It's a reminder of the Gaelic speaking settlers from the highlands and islands of Scotland who came to Cape Breton, to make it a very special place - and it's through them that the language, the fiddle music and step dancing of their ancestors lives on.

I've been there a couple of times , and always find something new in the buildings, the exhibits - and the friendly guides. The latest building is the United Church, taken from its original site at Malagawatch and floated across the Bras D'or Lake to Iona in 2003. There's also a store, a school house, farmhouses and homesteads... and much more.

You need to visit the Highland Village to understand and appreciate much of the history of Cape Breton!
