This was a good example of how Cape Breton settlers lived, but it wasn't as extensive or historically accurate as others of its type. Don't expect Plimoth Plantation levels of historical research.

The Highland Village Museum tells the story of Gaelic settlement in Nova Scotia. The Gaelic culture was an oral one and there are very few written records. This makes our work very interesting and one of the reasons we were pleased to recently receive the Dr. Phyllis R. Blakeley Award.

The Blakeley Award was established by the Council of Nova Scotia Archives in 1988 and is presented annually to an institution or organization displaying outstanding accomplishments in the archival field.

The Highland Village was recognized because of the use of archival material, the service to the Gaelic speaking public and the learners who will use the site. The material is now preserved for future generations. The Highland Village also collaborated with other institutions to gather material and make it accessible.

Thank you for taking the time to visit with us.

The price of admission is very reasonable. Even a better deal with CAA or by purchasing a multi museum pass. The staff were informative and welcoming. The scenery and history are both awe inspiring. There are special activities sporadically so it is worth checking their site. We lucked into a day camp for children. My daughters were able to spend a day inI costume learning history and gaining an appreciation of Gaelic culture. The whole day, including their meal was only $30 per child. They got to card wool and dye it, make butter and bannock and eat it, sing Gaelic songs at a milling frolic, learn to speak a bit of Gaelic, make candles...learn history among many other memorable moments. They both rated the day 5 star.

wonderfully laid out. The tour through this village takes you from old Scotland over to the new country and through the growth and experiences of an immigrant village.

Period houses and rock shelters all assembled on a drop-dead gorgeous hill to teach us about the Highland Resettlements to Nova scotia and the Scots' subsequent living conditions in Cape Breton...lots of re-enacters in costumes...call to see when there are actors there to have a caileigh with visitors.

Fabulous restaurant in motel next door....the whole place takes a day's outing...animals, working blacksmith, general store .... the hillside site could be a difficulty for wheelchairs but check the site, they may have transpport for people with disabilities.

High quality historic site.
