“Outstanding hospitality”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

My wife Barbara and I stayed at A Seafaring Maiden for two nights . The hosts really understood what providing hospitality and excellent service was all about. The breakfasts were appealing and were taken as a group with the other folk that had booked for the previous night. This was not altogether unusual in our experience during this trip, but the pleasing thing was that this was not overwhelming as there are only three bedrooms available in the house. The house has been lovingly restored and appropriately furnished as a wonderful multistoried home with a maritime outlook-it was previously owned by one of Anne Marie' relatives-so it means a lot to them. Make sure you ask them about the local lobster !! Their touristic advice was greatly appreciated, particularly where we could purchase live lobster, which was cooked while you waited for and about $8 / pound, direct from the wholesaler/retailer (we would pay four times as much as that here in Australia). They set us up in the loft of their barn, provided butter and appropriate utensils to consume the crustaceans, advice on how to get the most meat from each lobster (this was very helpful although we were already skilled in this type of activity) and opened the large upper window so that we had a panoramic view of the estuary whilst we consumed quality seafood and wine- a wonderful experience that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. These hosts really encapsulate what everybody would like to experience when they stay in B&Bs which is made all the more enjoyable by the reasonable tariff that they charge.

If the experience of bed and breakfasts is largely about the hosts and how you feel when you are in their home, then it is no wonder that A Seafaring Maiden has won nearly all the B&B awards in Nova Scotia than almost any other. The century home is lovingly restored with period antiques; the rooms are spacious and comfortable and all feature private washrooms. The area is great for hiking, antiquing, historical sites, and golf. There are a number of great restaurants nearby, but the breakfasts are so delicious and filling that you probably won't need to eat until dinner. The piano room and numerous bookshelves in the parlour and upstairs hall will keep you entertained on rainy days. All in all, one of the best B&B's I've stayed in. Bill and Ann Marie will provide you with all the local info you need, and you'll feel very much at home... yet they are not at all obtrusive! Special requests were accommodated with ease; they really do go the extra mile. We will return again,

Room Tip: Each of the rooms has it's own character, and are roughly equal in size- the "Captains"...

We stayed 1 night at "A Seafaring Maiden" in Granville Ferry, NS. It was an excellent stay. Bill and Anne Marie were very good hosts and we felt right at home. The house is an amazing old 'character' home that has been taken excellent care of. The room was spotless, our bathroom was located 'en suite' and the shower, sink and toilet were all new fixtures. Everything was spotless and very nicely done. The bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was really really really delicious, and I would 100% stay there again and recommend it to all travelers.

Room Tip: Choose the "Captain" room if you want an ensuite bathroom (I am not sure if any of the oth...

We stayed at "A Seafaring Maiden" B&B for only one night in Sept. but it was most enjoyable. Our room was clean, well appointed and very comfortable. The work that has gone into the care and preservation of this 19th century home was apparent to even a casual observer such as myself. We wished we could have stayed longer to absorb more of the history that pervades this part of Nova Scotia. We would love to go back.
Thank you, Bill and AnnMarie, for being the most gracious hosts and serving such an excellent breakfast.

Beautiful house and pleasant hosts, but hosting needs fine tuning. We arrived around 4.30 pm, greeted by Bill...led to room Bessie with lovely view of the river. Disappointed to find shower room outside room..shower being of quite some age and neglected...room perfect, with all appropriate furniture. As it was part of a tour, we had been on the road for a week and found having to go downstairs to ask for a coffee a bind, as this had previously been supplied. More flexibility is needed with breakfast times, as I assume most people are on holiday and would like to take their breakfast around 9 am...although perfect service at breakfast time, I feel more attention needs to be paid to guests...we checked out at 11am, but having my shower, with difficulty, around 10am, had to dash across the landing as Bill was already changing sheets in other rooms..I found this inappropriate..I just feel that the guest should feel more like the guest...

Room Tip: Although Bessie is a beautiful room, I would not take it again, on account of the shower and toilet...

We enjoyed a four day stay at the Maiden. We enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere, the nutritious and varied breakfasts and the friendship of the gracious host. Each day we were provided with a weather forecast and suggestions of where to visit. Our host was happy to accomodate our specific needs even lending use a rope. We certainly will stay there again if we are in the area.
