There probably won't be enough space to write all that needs to be said about this B&B. Bill & Ann Marie were the consummate innkeepers -- and we left knowing we had made new friends.
From the start, Bill was infinitely helpful during our travel planning process. He spent much time helping us choose the perfect room, recommending local museums and restaurants, and just being warm and inviting. We couldn't wait to arrive in Granville because he had already set our expectations high.
The B&B is beautifully appointed, and is very spacious. One of the things that stood out for me was the amenities which are common in hotels, but often missing in B&B's (i.e. hairdryers in the rooms, ample room to store luggage, etc.). We stayed in the Captain's Room, which afforded a nice breeze off the river and a private bathroom. We were never disrupted by noise from the other guests, despite the fact there was a family in the house during our stay.
Unfortunately, I returned home after a week's stay several pounds heavier -- thanks to the delicious breakfasts prepared for us. Bill & Ann Marie were accommodating about special requests (decaf all around), and were quick and attentive during mealtime. I've stayed at some B&B's where I was left to fend for myself during breakfast ... and others where the hosts "hovered" around us at the table, making it hard to relax. Bill & Ann Marie struck that perfect balance of providing service and hospitality without being smothering or annoying.
One of our goals for our visit was to go whale-watching. Bill was exceedingly helpful in giving an honest assessment of local tour operators -- and making contact for us. We were thrilled with his recommendation, which was spot-on. Our other goal was to do genealogy research; Bill was knowledgeabout about local resources, and gave us good leads for contacts. His recommendations for dining were perfect.
One of the nicest touches, however, was Ann Marie's warm, handwritten birthday card waiting for me on our arrival. It was clear to us all around that these two are not just in this business to earn a living. They truly enjoy people, are generous and compassionate, and know how to tune in to others' needs.
We left Granville feeling as if we had been very enriched, and we will definitely be back.
As an aside -- Granville is a very convenient, affordable home base if you're exploring the Annapolis Valley, or Digby Neck. We drove to Brier Island almost daily and found it to be an easy trip.
