Owner description: At Grand-Pre, get to know the Acadians, Nova Scotia's early French settlers. Theirs is a story of pioneer life, tragedy, and triumphant survival. This commemorative site was the heart of the 17th and 18th century Acadian village that became the scenic setting for Longfellow's narative poem Evangeline. A Visitor Reception and Interpretation Centre opened in September 2003 with new interpretation exhibits and a multimedia theater. Take time to walk in the superb flower gardens and admire the beautiful scenery. You will be charmed by the natural beauty of the surroundings.

If you want to learn more about the Acadians, this is the place to go. The 3D video was outstanding; the museum and grounds are exceptional. A grand historical site and interpretive center/gift shop worth a side trip off of the main highway.

“Interesting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

Grand-Pré National Historic Site of Canada commemorates Grand-Pré area as a centre of Acadian settlement from 1682 to 1755 and the Deportation of the Acadians, which began in 1755 and continued until 1762.

There is not a lot of ground to cover or that much to see but what there is is interesting enough to make the visit worthwhile. The 22 minutes movie depicting what the Acadians lived through is a must see while there. After watching the video you can check out a display of pictures and some artifacts then enjoy a leisurely stroll through the pretty gardens and visit the cute little church. I felt a little sad while visiting because this was once the homeland of my ancestors. All in all it was an interesting visit. After all these years The spirit of the Acadians is still very strong and lives on in so many of us.

“Wonderful Historical Site”

There was a very fine theater presentation about the historical facts, in French and English. Large clean restrooms were wonderful. Sweet gift shop carried local merchandise.

“Requires lots of interest in British-French history”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

This site is probably best appreciated by taking in the view of the area from up the hill and by reading about the Acadians and their expulsion on Wikipedia. As noted in preceding reviews, there is nothing remaining of the Acadian settlement, other than the fact that the land continues to be farmed, having been transformed from salt marsh by the Acadian settlers. The history of the Acadian expulsion has been romanticized, apparently in part due to the fictional story of "Evangeline," and this is perpetuated by the manner of presentation of the history in the interpretive centre. As a result, unless one listens very carefully, one is left to believe that the Acadians were expelled for no good reason at the hands of the nasty British.

That said, yes, the grounds are pleasant. And our tour guide did a nice job of making it as interesting as possible.
