“Spotty service spoils the experience”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

On the surface this should be an exceptional place. After all it has one of the nicest locations in Nova Scotia, with a large wharfside patio overlooking Chester's Front Harbour. The food is usually decent although not overly ambitious. However the service is painfully slow on regular nights and virtually nonexistent on busy nights. On our last visit we were told when we arrived that it would be 45 minutes to an hour to get our order, and then 20 minutes later we were advised that it would be two hours as the kitchen was backed up. Sadly this is normal. It often takes 20 minutes just to have your order taken, and it's not uncommon for tables that were seated long after you to get their food first.

“Used to be great”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

For years we have lunched at the Rope Loft as we live locally in the summer. We have always enjoyed the ambiance and the view from the deck (the inside is another story). Over the past year the atmosphere has changed although the view stayed the same. The server's attitudes suggested frustration (as noted in other reviews) and the food has certainly gone downhill. A favorite used to be a simple lobster roll with mayo and celery. Now our server advised us that it is unavailable without onions, which to us ruins it completely. The french fries are terribly over salted/spiced and lead to "dynamite recall" later in the day.

So we will be going elsewhere. There are much better places to eat in Chester (The Galley waterfront restaurant for example). We hope that the Rope Loft can "clean up their act" and return to their past glory as we had many happy memories there.

“Great food, great service, atmosphere, location”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Came in with a party of 8 for a late lunch. Service was excellent, and very friendly. Atmosphere was hard to describe; wooden interior, with a lot of natural light coming from the outside, so it felt somewhat rustic. Yeah, that's the word. It's definitely a pub feel, but with top notch food. There's a nice outdoor area by the water as well.

We had lobster linguini (lots of fresh shellfish), seafood chowder (same, very well prepared), and lots of fish cakes. I tried fish cakes at two other places after this one hoping for something similar, but Rope Loft definitely had the best. You could tell, it's mostly about the fish, with the potato just binding it all together, and some amazing spices.

Highly recommended.

“Great atmosphere, location, mussels-worst clams ever!”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

I've been to this restaurant many times in the past and have recommended it over and over for anyone trying to experience the South Shore of Nova Scotia and all its delights. However, I would caution anyone who is looking for great whole clams-HOLD OFF. I order clams pretty much wherever I go, but these would have to be the worst. The batter, which is not even close to good is more Japanese style and takes away from the taste completely. I couldn't tell if they were fresh, frozen, tasty, etc because all I could taste was the batter. Besides this, for $14 you seriously get about 10 of them. In most restaurants you would have a full plate. Portion size was laughable and I'm not a big eater. On a nicer note-the mussels were great and wine was lovely.

“Great Location and View”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The Rope Loft was a good place to grab a bite and enjoy the view. The food was good and the place was clean. We asked to sit on the top deck and they complied even though it was not open yet. The service was a bit slow but the waitress was nice and kept our drinks filled. There were several good choices on the menu; but I went with just a burger and fries and I wasn't disappointed. I would definitely go again when in Chester; but, it's not somewhere you go out of your way to dine there.
