“Great place to stay”
Reviewed August 7, 2010

We did an 8-day road trip from Long Island to Cape Breton. Each night a different hotel or B&B. Of the hotels, this was one of the best. Very friendly staff, extremely neat and clean room!. Don't be put off by the fact the main office is also a Pizza Parlor!

The hotel was close to town, just 1/2 mile from the Red Shoe restaurant and the local town hall where we attended a ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) with fiddle playing and step dancing.

Booked in for 2 days and stayed for 10. It was a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere with delicious breakfasts. Homemade bread and cinnamon buns followed by an excellent breakfast cooked by the host, Dave Cameron. Our apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable with all the comforts of home. This Inn is conveniently located to all the Cape Breton tourist attractions and the Mabou River flows through the town which is surrounded with lush farmland and contented dairy cattle. Beautiful scenery all around and our 10 stay changed a trip into a relaxing vacation.
Many thanks to Donna and Dave for their hospitality!

We wanted to stay two nights at the Duncriegan in Mabou but they were booked so we took a chance and reserved a room across the street at the River Inn. Although a very basic "no frills" type accommodation, the River Inn is kept spotless and the service is very friendly.

Our room (#2) had a private bath located down the hall. They gave us a couple of bathrobes so we could modestly travel the hallway to the washroom. No air conditioning in the room but the open windows and fan allowed enough air to circulate that it wasn't uncomfortable. There was no hair dryer in the bathroom and no TV in the room.

For breakfast you can have continental with fresh baked biscuits etc or opt for the menu. I ordered an omelette which was loaded with ham, cheese and mushrooms...delicious.

Overall I would recommend this Inn to anyone not minding a simple stay with no frills.

The Mabou River Inn is a modest, simple, but clean motel that has a portable trailer feel to it. The furnishings are older and a bit scuffed. The bathroom was ensuite for our room, but I noticed most of the other rooms had a bathroom down the hall.

Internet access was handy, but while surfing we had to listen to the personal conversation of a friend of a staff member paying a visit to the kitchen. Such conversations should be out of earshot of guests. The clothes dryer wasn't working properly, but the owner nicely used his own and even folded everything!

The Inn is also handy for walking to the Red Shoe Pub. Compared to other properties in this part of Nova Scotia, I'd say the Mabou River Inn is overpriced by about $20 to $25. Good for a short stop, but too basic for a longer stay.

We stayed one night at Mabou River Inn. We drove from Halifax and stopped by at this place before heading to the Cabot Trail. The place is nice, clean and very comfortable. There is free wireless connection. The breakfast is great and you have a choice of continental (4.50 dollars) or full breakfast with bacon, ham and eggs cooked at your choice (7.50 dollars). We drove to the beach park and did some hiking there. The place was terrific and we had the whole beach by ourselves.
We visited "The Red Shoe Pub", a famous pub in Novascotia, owned by the Ratkin's family who themselves are well known musician. The food there was very good and the gaelic music performed by young fiddler and pianist was excellent.
We will definitely stay at the Mabou River Inn again if the opportunity brings us back to Cape Breton.

Very friendly, family-run hotel on the West coast of Cape Breton.
Ideal for families, couples, singles.
Proprieters very friendly with great local knowledge. Rooms not luxurious - but clean and tidy, very comfortable and quiet.
Breakfasts are optional - but great value.
Self catering apartments also available - have used them twice before - ideal for family groups.
Mabou is central enough to explore most of CBI - Cabot Trail, Beaches, Hiking Trail. Great music at the Red Shoe Pub in the village. Good food available locally for evening meals.

  • Liked — Owner on-site - personal interest in all guests.
  • Disliked — Can't think of negatives on ou 6 day stay.
