We were looking for a place to grab a quick pizza for supper before we went a Murder Mystery at Fort Louisbourg. We were told the only place to get pizza was at this place. So we went in and ordered a Donair Pizza to go. She told us it would be 35 mins. I was a little shocked it would take that long. But we paid for it and left and headed down the street to a Chip Wagon to get the kids something to eat. We came back to get the pizza 35 mins later and i still had to wait for another 10 mins. I finally got the pizza and walked across the street to where we were staying. One good thing I must say about the pizza, It was hot. Other then that it was gross. Wife and i had one piece and threw the rest of it out. So if your looking for a pizza take out don't head here.

We recently ate at Fortress View Restaurant. The atmosphere was nice enough and the service was good. However, I will echo a previous post that the food was poor. A traveling companion said his slaw was almost rancid and another thought the soup to be of poor quality. My fish and chips was average, and the restaurant did not carry malt vinegar as a condiment. A restaurant in a tourist town should do better.

A sign outside the Fortress View Restaurant caught our eye: $22.99 for a lobster dinner. Every other lobster dinner we had seen on a menu until now had been at least ten dollars more, so we thought this was our chance to do the “whole lobster thing”. Inside, the daily specials board also featured the seafood platter for $19.99, so we decided to go with that also.

The restaurant itself is quaint enough; we sat in a booth and heard conversation from locals during our meal. Our waitress seemed friendly and efficient as she took our orders. It wasn’t until the food started to arrive that the service definitely went south.

The seafood platter is described on their menu as “a delicious combination of deep fried haddock, scallops, shrimp, mussels and clams”. It comes with veggies and choice of potato. We requested roasted potatoes if they had any; mashed otherwise. The menu indicated the inclusion of the “salad bar” with the lobster dinner, but there was no actual salad bar there. We were told that a simple garden salad would be provided instead.

When we inquired about the size of the lobster, we were told it was a pound and a half. When it finally arrived (quite some time later), it certainly looked like less. In fact, the whole plate looked like less since all that was on it was the sad little lobster. At least it wasn’t over-cooked.. The accompanying salad arrived in a little side bowl and I had to ask for the dressing. The bread basket that was mentioned on the menu was missing. After making an inquiry about it, we had basically finished our meal by the time two slices of garlic toast arrived.

The seafood platter was not quite what we expected. The scallops, for instance, were wrapped in bacon but not in a good way. A lot of what was on that plate looked and tasted like it had been sitting for a long time before it ended up on our table. Nothing was really hot. The mussels were dry. The potatoes were quite obviously leftovers from yesterday (since our server had said that they had served roasted potatoes the day before and wasn’t sure if any were available today) and the accompanying peas and carrots were obviously frozen. Also, only the clam strips and haddock were deep fried – which is not necessarily a bad thing – but the description led us to expect that everything would be deep fried. On the positive side, the haddock and the shrimp were decent.

In the end, we wondered if we would have enjoyed our meal more had we stuck with simple selections, but as both of our meals were listed on the daily specials board, that’s no excuse. Anyway, despite peeling out over fifty dollars, we did not feel as though we received a good seafood dinner in return.

Good Fish Meals and decent, though priceyish, lobster. They won't serve dressed lobster, you have to do the hard work yourself. Good friendly service and open later than other eateries in town.
