“A great alternative to the Keltic Lodge”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2009

As soon as we began planning a trip to Cape Breton, we began hearing about the Keltic Lodge. But, because we were intimidated by its price, we ended up discovering Seascape. This was the most expensive place we stayed, but it seems that it costs more to sleep when in the Ingonish area. All that said, it was also one of the nicest places we stayed. It was incredibly modern and comfortable and very clean. It was a relief to arrive here after a much-too-rustic experience up in Cape North. We found breakfast to be more than adequate, and enjoyed the location and amenities. There is no need to pay extra for the cottages closer to the water as they all curve along the bay.

Much thought went into the siting of these 10 cottages so that none are overlooking but all have a view. We had number 8 which even had a dual aspect - one view from the lounge and another to wake up to in the bedroom.
The rooms are an acceptable size without being overgenerous but the point of being here is to spend as much time out and enjoying the country as possible. The living room has sofa looking out from the picture window while the table acts as ingeneous extra storage. A dual air con/heating unit is supplemented by a wood-burning effect fireplace for colder days.
A covered patio with seating allows one to enjoy the air and the view - even if it rains.
At the back of the room is a breakfast surface with stools, sink, fridge and coffee maker. There are also a microwave, crockery, cutlery and glasses stowed in a seperate unit.

We enjoyed the breakfasts in the restaurant and chose to dine there each evening partly because I like to have wine with my meal in the evening on holiday but also because we found no other restaurant in the vicinity at which we would choose to dine. I do not recognise the complaints made by some other reviewers. Neither the menu nor the wine list was extensive but there was enough variety to suit most people. We both felt that the food we ordered was good and more than a match for many more expensive meals served up to us during our holiday.
This will rank among the best places we stayed at on this trip.

My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary this past July. We went to Nova Scotia on our honeymoon and always wanted to go back. We researched our trip for 6 months before going and were very pleased with the results. We were looking for a quiet cottage near the ocean. What an awesome stay! The cottages were very clean and tidy, they even came with bathrobes to lounge around in. The bathroom has a jet tub which was perect after our drive from Prince Edward Island. The views were spectacular and the sunsets were a work of art. I really enjoyed the breakfast at the restaurant. I ordered the Highland breakfast each morning. I believe Ingonish is the best stop on the Cabot Trail. It was the trip of a lifetime!

Our cabin (#1) was pristine: clean, spotless with comfortable furnishings. We were in the closest cabin to the restaurant/reception, but still had a pretty view of the bay, and it was still very quiet. The furniture was well made, and the linens were of high quality thread count, soft and comfortable. The bedroom was a good size, with good closet space and a double dresser with a lot of room for clothes (if you were staying for an extended period). The tile bathroom was very large and extremely clean, with a jetted tub/shower combination and relatively new/updated fixtures. The towels were of good quality and shampoo/lotion were provided, as well as hairdryer. The housekeeping service was very good...(we also left a generous tip each day.) The living room had a pull out sofabed which also had equally good quality sheets and blanket already fitted and ready inside. Living room was on the smaller side, but still sufficed. A little area housed the refrigerator, sink and counter with coffee maker and 2 bar stools - very convenient. Another area in the living room had the microwave and crockery and glasses. The gas fireplace resembled a wood stove in the corner and was still charming. The living room had A/C but not in the bedroom. I suppose one can leave the bedroom door open. We generally just left the windows slightly open, and that provided beautiful cool ocean breezes instantly.

The location was great for us - at the east entrance to Cape Breton Highlands National Park, and a good base for us to visit all the sites. Ingonish has a quiet, serene, understated beauty, and is less commercialized than other areas we visited.

We did not dine at the restaurant, except for breakfast (included in our room rate). The breakfast was very good, made with good quality ingredients. The coffee was exceptionally good. A few times, we had to leave quite early in the morning to reach certain destinations, and the hosts were very kind enough to provide for us, the night before, with a large tray of cold cereal, milk, fresh cut bowls of fruit, glasses of juice to put in the fridge, so we could have breakfast in our room before heading out at the crack of dawn. (Their breakfast is served only between 8:00-9:30am, i believe).

Overall, it was a wonderful stay, and would definitely recommend this place to others, who are seeking a quiet, beautiful, convenient and clean place to stay while in Cape Breton. I felt the price of the rooms reflected the amenities and overall experience. Please see attached photos.

We didn't know whether to book somewhere on the east or west coast of Cape Breton but were pleased with our choice (Ingonish - east). It is less commercialised than Cheticamp and much quieter. These cottages are of high standard, with nice furniture and carpets. It was useful to have a small kitchen sink, a fridge, crockery and cutlery. Most cottages have fantastic views. Ours (number 10) didn't because we asked for the most private one, quiet and away from the others. We weren't disappointed though, we still had some view and we were away from the road but closest to the garden and hot tub. We looked forward to our daily "seafood appetizer" hidden in our fridge. Breakfasts were very good. There is also evening dining on the premises but we preferred the local, more informal place a ten minute walk north, with a good view of the harbour. The seafood platter there was amazing. The hosts, Julie and Rod were helpful and friendly.

The cottage was exceptional and very clean, well worth the price. You may want to check for pillows before it becomes inconvenient.
The restaurant was anything but exceptional and we were very disappointed to say the least. I will take the blame for this in part because the writing was on the wall. Had I actually looked at the menu before making the reservation I would have known to stay clear.
It was painfully obvious that the “chef” or more accurately the “cook” was terribly over-extended and the repetitive, un-creative menu certainly did not live up to the billing nor did it command a $200 bill for a table of three. I could go on to critique the entire over priced menu but will refrain and just issue a caution that one, of course, should browse the wine list as well as the menu prior to sitting!

We stayed for three days in late May. Our cottage was clean and comfortable. Our host was welcoming and gave us some good advice about our time in the area. We had beautiful views of the water and mountains. The bathroom was large and clean. The bedroom was also large and clean and the bed was very comfortable. Our breakfast each morning was ample and very tastey. We enjoyed ouselves thoroughly. I would highly recommend a stay at this establishment!
