“Excellent Course that is being killed by the Government”

Highlands Links Golf Course
Reviewed July 14, 2013

An amazing place to golf. Difficult, great views of ocean, mountains, and valley. Moose walking out on the course. The government though is doing its best to run it into the ground. The greens were in rough shape in June when they should have been perfect. They need a private owner and get the government out of it! One of the best places I have golfed

Kudos to the course manager, he knows how to work magic. He also is very welcoming, knowledgeable and certainly a dedicated professional. The views are just unbelievable and it is sincerely a thrill to be able to play it. The Only Negative: Ladies in the Pro Shop need to be given sessions on how to greet visitors and make them feel as if they matter!

I was somewhat disappointed in my golf experience at Highland Links this past week. After reading about the course and looking forward to playing one of the Top 100 courses in North America, I expected an extraordinary experience in line with the $260+ it cost my wife and I. The course did not deliver. It is a nice course and very challenging (expect a few three putts if your wedges are not accurate) but it only deserves a sub $100 price. The greens were not in great shape but I can forgive this as many courses suffer though the winter occasionally. The scenery was nice on the few holes that bordered the water but not spectacular. I'm not saying that we did not enjoy our game, we did, but something was missing. We've golfed far better courses for less money.

I love playing Highland Links. The scenery is spectacular, holes challenging but forgiving and it even has a mommy and baby moose this year.

This stunningly beautiful, well designed and challenging course is very sadly being let down by management and staff. The greens (early June 2013) were in terrible shape with a great deal of apparent winter kill and several with roped off areas but without indication that one side of the rope or the other was ground under repair. We can, perhaps, be generous and assume that the environment and not the greens keeper is to blame (ergo my score of 3 vice the 2 it otherwise merits), but there can be no excuse for some clubhouse staff who seemed entirely without enthusiasm and traditional Cape Breton good cheer. The experience was also much diminished by small details, for example several holes with empty ball washers for three straight days, beer cart without cups despite repeated requests, and lack of selection carried by the cart. None of these are capital issues; they merely require attention to detail by the management and some leadership. It is a matter of pure speculation, but I very strongly believe the blame may be assigned to the fact that the course is owned and run by the federal government (Parks Canada) and staffed by members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada. The federal government simply cannot effectively and efficiently operate what should clearly be a commercial enterprise. Under proper management, the course should thrive but, if it doesn't, then this very sad fact must be accepted.
