“Splendid isolation-and of hosts too”
Reviewed July 27, 2012

Our group of three spent a night here half way through our tour of the Cabot Trail. Once we finally tracked down house, a little way off the trail, it was a beautifully done up home deep in the woods, seemingly a million miles from anywhere. There was also a short walking trail in the beautiful grounds. We walked the trail the next morning before leaving, when the sun came out after the rain, accompanied by their dog. Spectacular scenery with the hills in the background and the smell of freshly mowed grass. Beautiful and refreshing.

The one down of our stay was the rather uncommunicative nature of our hosts. In our four day trip around Cape Breton, everyone had been so warm and welcoming. As a previous review noted, the couple who ran the b&b were remote, in sharp contrast. They welcomed us on arrival, all right, but they were not particularly friendly. We could not operate the tv in our room because we couldn't figure out how to work the two remotes. Breakfast was ok, eggs and bacon and toast, but the husband who took charge of the breakfast could not even crack a smile. Our feeling after breakfast and our walk was that we should get out of their way as fast as possible. No doubt they didn't mean to convey that impression, but this is the hospitality business, and their demeanour put a damper on a beautifully appointed place in a spectacular setting.

I won't stay there again.

We enjoyed our one night stay at the mannor. Beautiful location off Cabot trail en route Bay st Lawrence. Very lavish room comfortable bed and well equipped bathroom. Hot water just enough to fill the jacuzzi. Good breakfast but quite basic. Hosts quite remote take your money and provide the basic information. Nice to drive down to the bay towards sunset. Places to eat few nearby most back on the trail. The rusty anchor is a nice place to eat at Pleasant Bay before arrival if driving the Cabot clockwise. The grounds are a bit spooky after dark.

My husband and I stayed at the Oakwood Manor B&B mid June. We stayed in the suite, which was lovely and very private. It has a separate entrance and a nice deck off the sliding doors. The owners are very nice and the grounds are beautiful.

My husband and I stayed one night at this B&B. We were disappointed with the service. Our host did not share a single conversation with us, there was a heavy ambiance at the dinner table. The room was OK, the house too. Did not seem to be run as well as other B&Bs we visited. No gardens to enjoy. We walked in the premises, lots of land but it seemed rather untouched, no nice touches. We do not recommend this place.

Internet access very poor and the computer needs updating because it is very, very slow.

No instructions on how to use the room TV (two sets of remotes and it has to be on a specific channel) and had to wait until the evening when the owner returned to find out.

Beds hard but breakfast was fine.

This was our one and only overnight stop on our drive around the Cabot Trail, and I am so glad it was! We had a fantastic stay; my only problem was that we were only staying for one night. The hosts were kind and knowledgeable of the area. They took the time to chat with all the guests and made us feel right at home. We really enjoyed the common areas. We sat with our bottle of wine and our books for quite some time and chatted with all the other guests. Because of this, we were able to find out about the Glenora Inn & Distillery - the only whiskey distillery in Canada. If you are travelling counter clockwise around the trail, you haven't missed it - it's close to Inverness in Glenville. If you have the time, do the tour [they start on the hour], you will not be disappointed.

The one piece of advice I will give to travelers is to eat before you arrive if you are close to dinner time. It is in quite a remote area and you will have a hard time finding a dinner establishment close to the B & B.

Oakwood Manor is beautiful, economical and exemplifies the true beauty of Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail. A gem not to be missed.
