“Mornings with the eagle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

We stayed at the St. Ann's Motel this past summer, it was our resting point as we visited Cape Bretton Island and the Cabot Trail. We looked forward to either our morning or early evening discussions with Douglas the innkeeper...he provided us with tips on local restaurants and activities. We were happy with the Motel's location, as it is one of the many gateways to the Cabot Trail and we found it suitably located for our visits to Baddeck, Ingonish and the Gaelic College of Arts and Crafts. Although at the cross roads of the Cabot Trail and the TransCanada Highway, we did not find the road noise to be disturbing, we in fact were awakened by the sounds of the local birds, and not the passing vehicles. And, of course, the morning visit of the bald eagle right outside our window, an impressive local attraction.

Saw a bald eagle before we got the key in the door which the owner came over and pointed out. The owner, Doug, was extremely friendly and helpful. Room was perfect and there is a restaurant next door with great food at reasonable prices. The view from the room was one of the best I've ever experienced.

As we drove Cape Breton's Cabot Trail (starting at Baddeck and then taking several days to drive counterclockwise around the island), our motel experiences were a bit hit-or-miss. But St. Ann's Motel was definitely one of the hits! What a spectacular view of St. Ann's Bay. And then the bald eagles and other wildlife in the area make this place very special. With the Lobster Galley Restaurant (where we ate dinner and then breakfast the next morning) within easy walking distance right next door, St. Ann's Motel is a great place to stay at the start of the Cabot Trail's eastern loop.

I love bald eagles, and while none dropped down directly in front of our picture window, we did spot one perched in a nearby snag that evening, and then more the next morning. They were waiting for the fishermen, who were fishing nearby off a point along the shore, to filet their catches, leaving scraps behind for the eagles, seagulls and crows to scoop up.

The room, itself, is simple. Very important to us is the bed, which was firm and provided us with a good night's sleep. Our room had a great shower curtain (featuring cartoon ducks) that previous guests described as "best shower curtain in the world" in the guest book. Other visitors must have been even more fortunate than we, because they described their eagle visits in glowing terms. I'm hoping that meant they saw eagles perched right outside the picture window on the driftwood outside ... just as the framed picture in our room promised. We didn't get that this time around ... so we'll just have to go back!

Room Tip: We were in No. 8, which is closer to the highway. (The highway is noisy until nighttime, when traffi...

We read about this motel on Trip Advisor and were not disappointed. The room was simple and clean and the big picture window provided a spectacular view of the lake. our host was very courteous. Perfect for our one night stay as we looped through Cape Breton. One thing of note - it is just off the main road where trucks will pass through. But if you spend the day hiking and are are exhausted like we are, you may not care.

We have stayed in countless non-chain motels throughout the US and Canada and this is in the top 5% of all accommodations. The motel has more of a bed and breakfast feel with the way the rooms are furnished and maintained. The owner/operators are friendly and courteous. We have extended our stay in this area so that we can stay here longer.

This is a real find!

We stayed one night, July 19, 2013.
Since we had decided to drive the Cabot Trail through Cape Breton Highlands National Park, I looked for a suitable place to stay on what I call the eastern beginning of the trail. St. Ann's Motel was well rated at Trip Advisor so I made a reservation there. Although the map shows it being in South Haven, Nova Scotia, it is also advertised as an address on the Cabot Trail in Baddeck. We arrived there mid-afternoon to be greeted by the very friendly owner/manager. For a simple little eight unit, one story motel in this area it would be hard to beat. The room was plenty large enough, with a big comfortable bed. The room and the bath were very clean. There is a refrigerator & coffee maker in the room. Every one of the rooms here has a picture window that faces (from the back of the room) St. Ann's Bay, part of the Bras D'or Lake. The view was impressive, even though it was a little cloudy with some fog while we were there. There is a restaurant next door, called the Lobster Galley, so if you haven't brought something to get you going in the morning, it's either eat there, drive back to Baddeck, or go to Cedar House Bakery & Restaurant in somewhat nearby Boularderie, NS. We chose, on the advice of the owner, to eat dinner at the Cedar House. The main road north to Sydney is right out front, but traffic noise did not bother us. For the those interested, the only Gaelic College in North America is nearby.
All in all, a positive experience. Comfortable little motel in a beautiful setting at a reasonable price.

Perfect location if you are planning on driving the Cabot Trail.
Rooms are comfortable and very clean. View is amazing!
The owner, Doug, is super friendly.

Only complaint is the noise as it is very close to the main road where the trucks head out to Sydney / Ferry to Newfoundland. There are not many services near by - actually only one restaurant with great breakfast at a reasonable price but supper is quite pricey with very few options - fish and chips at 15$ is the cheapest. You must drive 15 minutes to Baddeck for restaurant / gas / convenience store.
