We were disappointed upon arrival as Silver Dart Lodge did not live up to its pictures posted on their own website. We were promised a newly renovated room but were given an outdated basement room that smelled horribly like garbage when we arrived. The caretaker agreed with us that the room smelled very badly and we were given a better room that did not smell. The second room was adequate and clean but the carpet was old and stained and the furnishings were outdated. We would have been happier with the room if our expectations weren't raised by the unrealistic pictures of the lodge and rooms on their website. We did enjoy the outdoor pool and playground.

Room Tip: Book early and request a chalet or West Lodge Room. The east lodge rooms are much poorer in quality...

We didn't expect to find we had booked a room at a very large, expansive, well kept, motel style complex. The campus included a restaurant with a full glass wall overlooking the ocean, a very large swimming pool, and expansive lawns. Our room was huge with a common balcony and windows overlooking the ocean. The bed was very comfortable. We found we needed the AC unit and were very comfortable temperature wise. The staff was efficient on check in/out. We needed nothing that wasn't provided. Breakfast wasn't included but was affordable and good. Many people had dinner there but we opted for another restaurant. The hotel desk was helpful in that regard. All in all, a good choice.

Room Tip: As far as I recall, all rooms overlook the ocean. We liked our upper floor room as the views were a...

We had a very nice stay at SDL for one night. Our family of 5 stayed in the MacNeil House, which served us well. We had a separate bedroom with very comfortable king size bed. There was a living room with fold out couch, small dining table, and kitchen area with fridge.
The good: nice porch with a lovely view of the lake. Food in restaurant- both dinner and breakfast, was very nice (breakfast option of buffet or a la carte served) and service was very good. The view of the lake down by the restaurant, especially outside on the patio, was absolutely lovely. I'm sure the rooms in that area shared that view (the MacNiel house was further up the hill on the property, so the lake views were nice but more distant.) Location is terrific for that part of CB. There was also a nice pool and work out room if you want that sort of thing.
The exceptions- the fold out couch was awful, even for my littler kids. We tried taking out the mattress and putting it on the floor, and it was still awful. If I had it to do over, we would get an extra 1 or two cots and squeeze them in somewhere. Also, the AC was window unit in the living room area. In order to get its effects in the bed room, we had to leave the door open, which eliminates the privacy aspect, if that is important to you.
Still, all things considered, we felt this was a nice option. We did take in the local Ceilidh held nightly at the rectory of one of the churches. What a delightful experience. Kids initially put up a stink because they were hungry, and this put off dinner til 9. But once they were there, they really enjoyed it.

Room Tip: The specific location and room type in this property really matter, so do some homework

After reading many hotel reviews, we booked this hotel for our 21st wedding anniversary trip to Cape Breton Island. We were pleased with our stay. The view was beautiful and seemed to be one of the best. I saw the location of other hotels I had considered, but their views of the Bras d'Or Lake were blocked by other buildings. We spent most of our time exploring Cape Breton, so did not spend a lot of time at the hotel. We were there for 3 nights. The room was clean and comfortable. When we booked, we asked for a room with a good view since we were celebrating our anniversary. We definitely got a room with a great view, near the main office, on the first floor. The footsteps from upstairs were loud, but didn't bother us much. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel. We did eat one dinner and the food was very good. We only wish that restaurants would stay open a little longer during their high season in July. The restaurant closed at nine, as did many establishments in Baddeck. Since we were out exploring the island, it would be nice to come back and have a nice, late, relaxing dinner. But unfortunately that was not an option, since there wouldn't be anything open. The hotel was conveniently located in Baddeck and near the Cabot Trail. We were greeted with a bottle of wine to celebrate our anniversary. The lodge is not fancy, but is clean and comfortable with a gorgeous view of the lake. We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor, about 3 rooms from the main office. It was a great location. There was n...

Superb location, very good service, clean and nice rooms and all for a fair price - thumbs up! Absolutly good choice but in the high season you have to book well in advance. Especially if you are looking for a "chalet" room.

we booked the rooms in advance. When we got there we checked in and got our keys. They told us there were no rooms available with a view. We went to the rooms to discover they had put us in the basement. The room was dark and VERY musty smelling. My window opened up into the parking lot and was at eye level with the pavement. We went back to ask to change rooms, as we were staying for a week and I could not handle damp musty odor. After more than a half an hour of waiting they magically came up with two rooms with a view of the lakes. The rooms were clean and average. No fridge or microwave. I was in the middle unit of the 'west lodge' I think they put elephants in the rooms next to me everynight. There are parking directly outside the doors. The screen doors are the old wooden screen doors that slam when they close. If you are a light sleeper, I reccommend you stay at the cottages at the very back of the complex. My husband and I had stayed there a few weeks ago and had the best sleep in months in that room. King size bed and fireplace in the room.

Room Tip: make sure they dont stick you in the basement units. It is worth the upgrade to the chalets in the...

We booked two rooms (a couple and one single person) through the nearby tourist office. They offered breakfast at an additional 10 Dollars per room what seemed to us a fair value.
When we went for breakfast, there was no choice but the standard breakfast. It was priced in the menu at 8 dollars. So the single person paid more for breakfast then the actual price. When we complained to several staff members we got not very friendly answers.
We also used the guest laundry. The room was extremely dirty, the machines in not so good working order. We reported this also to the staff. No apologies at all.
The surroundings, especially the driveway and parking lots were in the course of renewing. A though smell was all around.
We do NOT recommend this Lodge at all.
The rooms and the pool were good, though.
