“Nice Inn and Restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2007

The Telegraph House is a large Victorian building, once the office of the first Trans-Oceanic Cable Company. The inn has been run by the same family for 5 generations. Our room was very small, but it had an ensuite bath. The room was clean and cheery, with nice period furniture. The restaurant had very good, reasonably priced food.

Great location in the downtown area.

We paid $120 for a queen size bed with a whirlpool tub. The room was comfortable, well decorated, and very clean.

We had a private balcony with chairs which was nice.

Free wireless internet with their access code.

Our room was on the 3rd floor and there aren't any elevators so be prepared to carry suitcases up multiple flights of stairs.

We didn't eat in the restaurant but chose the Baddeck Lobster Dinner instead. Not sure what the actual name of the restaurant is but you'll be able to find brochures for it. For $30 you get a 1lb lobster and all you can eat chowder, mussels, salad, dessert, coffee/pop.

They also own the Dunlop Inn which looked very nice and is on the waterfront but it was out of our price range for the amount of time we'd be in our room for our one night stay.

  • Liked — Location, clean room, whirlpool tub
  • Disliked — No elevator which was fine for us but could pose a problem for older/disabled travelers

Stayed in the main lodge for 1 night. Had a nice view of the water from our 3rd floor balcony. Room was clean and reasonably well appointed. Location was central to Cabot trail (spectacular driving tour). Staff was pleasant.

My sisters and I just returned from a trip to Nova Scotia. We stayed at the Telegraph House on 9/16 and 9/17. I just took another look at their website because I am sure I am a victim of a bait and switch. I have also read the other reviews and I'm not sure we all stayed at the same inn.

There were 3 adults in our party. We were given a room at the very end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the old building. The room was about the size of a postage stamp and contained 1 double (perhaps 3/4) bed and 1 twin.. The furniture was cheap and worn. It looked like it belonged in a child's room. There were 3 faded photos of Chuck and Di and they appeared to be the best of the decor. I'm pretty sure that I had this reservation booked before the end of May. We must have been at the bottom of the barrel when they were assigning rooms (assuming the pictures on their website are of their rooms).

Tired from the day's travel, we decided to eat at the inn. All of our meals were poor. The fettucini alfredo tasted like chicken a la king. The lasagna was dry. The lobster was a bit rubbery. Now, the service itself wasn't bad.......just the food.

I should have voiced a complaint while there but we decided to accept it as a place to sleep.....and not much more.

The Telegraph House was the first place we stayed on our tip to Cape Breton. Overall, it was a very nice experienece. The staff were friendly, the room was immaculately clean, the whirlpool tub was very nice, it had charm but was not overdone, and the location and parking were good. The only downside was it was possible to hear noises from the hall or other guests at night (babies crying, etc)- not very loudly, but I'm an extremely light sleeper. I would recommend this place- the price was right, and it was a comfortable stay.

We actually stayed at the McRae House for 3 nights, its owned by the telegraph house, it is so great and a short walk from town, the telegraph house does have an ok breakfast, and i suggest driving the cabot trail, and the hike at the keltic lodge, its great too, a side trip to meat cove would also be an interesting story to tell! make sure you eat at the yellow cello in baddeck!!

We stayed here for 3 nights in 9/05. The Telegraph House is a large house with B&B rooms (3-4 floors), and also has a long row of motel-style room along the back. We opted for the motel rooms, for ease of getting our luggage in and out. It was a fairly standard room with a tv but no telephone. There is a pay phone in the main house. There is also a nice lounge in the main house with a fireplace, where you can sit and read or have a glass of wine. The staff was terrific. Our stay included a generous breakfast. We had a pretty good dinner there one night, with live Acadian music. It is located right in the center of Baddeck, within walking distance to everything. We have recommended Telegraph House to other travelers. We enjoyed our stay here.
