“Gone Downhill”
Reviewed September 20, 2009

We stayed at the Lynnwood Inn in Baddeck on a recent trip to Baddeck. We had stayed there before and liked it. However, things change and this is certainly one that has. The carpet was dirty, there was very little light in the rooms, two lamps both with dull lighting. It would have been impossible to read by them. Also, when we went to check in, the girl at the desk announced that she didn't know whether our room was ready or not. I asked her to please find out and she said that she had no way of finding out. There was nowhere to put anything in the bathroom - no shelves, no bath racks, no counter. The linen was terrible - bath towels were not much larger than hand towels. The attitude on the part of the personnel was most uncaring. We would not stay there again unless they get their act together. I might also add that there was no internet in the lobby. This is unacceptable in these times. I have stayed at many hotels and motels and have never run into that problem.

The Inn was very nice - our room had a balcony which was nice to have - the only draw back was there were no chairs on the balcony. Baddeck is a beautiful place to visit - the Inn is centralized, so we just toured part of the town on foot.

We visited Baddeck in October to see the glorious fall colors of the Cape Trail. We decided to stay at the Lynwood Inn which is located in the middle of the Village of Baddeck. Our room was very comfortable and clean.

The main building which houses the reception area and restaurant is very dark and dingy - very low lighting and Victorian in style. We were not expecting that from the outside appearance - The receptionist was rude - had the feeling she just wanted us to go away! The next morning we were greeted by another young lady who was very friendly and helpful.

We didn't try the restaurant - too much wallpaper and nic-nac's - and the tables were very close together. We went across the street to an amazing pizza place called Tom's Pizza - had the most wonderful Pizza we ever tasted. Try it - you'll love it.

When I booked the Lynwood Inn, I wasn't really sure if it was as motel trying to be an "inn" - or - if it was truly an inn. Proved to be more of an Inn than a motel. My wife loved the Victorian ambiance (me - give me a plain - but very functional - Hampton Inn any day).

When we booked, we had asked for a room with a view - and the staff accommodated us with probably the best view in the house (Room 201). Although you had to ignore the mess of telephone poles, transformers and the like, it was a pretty good view.

Our room was comfortable and clean, with a very comfortable bed (we used only one of the two - can't comment on the other - didn't seem to be the same type). It had a small TV with good reception a handy refrigerator, coffee maker - and a very functional corkscrew as well as two wine glasses (in addition to the tumblers). Ice was available on the first floor. The room, adjacent to the street, was surprisingly quiet - with good double-pane windows in both the window and the doors to the balcony.

The building (not the main Inn, but the adjacent building) has three floors. The ground floor (which is almost a basement, although you can walk out on ground level on the far end), the first floor, which has ground floor access from the parking lot behind the main inn (not the main parking lot in front of the building, though). And the upper floor (2nd floor) - which has ground access from nowhere. The carpet on the stairs inside is long past due for replacement - really, really dirty. The room we stayed in show no signs of excessive wear.

From the main parking lot, it is a short walk over a stone path (not good for roll aboards) and then up half a flight or one and a half flights of stairs, depending on whether you're headed for the 1st or the 2nd floor. No elevators.

Bus tours are accommodated on the first floor. The bus parks in the rear parking lot and guests can then have ground level access through a side door to the 1st floor.

The ground floor houses a very good laundromat - about 4 washers and six dryers - all coin operated. Soap is available at the front desk in the main Inn - but not bleach. I was the only one using the facility the night I did my laundry.

There is a very handy convenience store immediately adjacent to the Inn - where we stocked up on a snak or two for our Cabot Trail excursions.

The staff was all very friendly and helpful.

We tried for breakfast (not included in your price) in the Inn restaurant one morning - but found ourselves with a whole bus load of folks who arrived as we did. So - we walked down the street to High Wheelers Cafe - a great place with great coffee and scones - and more (see my separate review of the High Wheeler). We had breakfast at the High Wheeler for the following two days. They also had a great box lunch deal - which we availed ourselves of for our jaunt over to the Fortress of Louisbourg.

We did have dinner at the Inn one night. I would rate the food as average. My scallops were buried in a thick cream sauce - which I thought a pity. There was live entertainment in the restaurant the night we chose to eat there. The entertainment was a guitar player/singer. Now I thought live entertainment in a place with about 8 tables a bit much. We were pleased that we were offered seating in the Inn's second dining room - with no entertainment (it was loud enough coming from the other room).

We found that we could easily make the Cabot Trail circuit in the 6-8 hours the local tourist information place (across from the Inn) indicated. We were going to do Fortress of Louisbourg the 2nd day of our stay - but since weather was crummy the first day, we tried the Cabot Trail again - going the other way. On our day of departure, we decided to visit the Fortress on our way out to Halifax. The Fortress is, of course, nowhere near to being on the way to Halifax from Baddeck, but we decided to give it go. Took us 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to the Fortress from the Inn (speed limit all the way). Got there a few minutes after the 9:30 a.m. opening. Spent about 3 hours at the Fortress (enough time, in my opinion) - and then on to Halifax - a five hour drive - going down Route 4 from Sydney - the locals all said it was faster to go down Route 4, than to go back over Route 105. Saw parts of Bras 'dor Lake on the way. The little one could see was beautiful (not too much of a view from the road - too many houses, trees ,etc. in the way).

All in all, the Lynwood Inn proved to be a great place to base ourselves for visiting the Cabot Trail and Fortress of Louisbourg.

The Lynwood Inn was a great find for us. We were traveling with my parents and two teenage sons. It is right in the heart of Baddeck, which is a beautiful small town at the starting point of the Cabot Trail. I found it to be well priced, and the food was EXCELLENT!. As far as the third floor without an elevator, it was one and a half flights up. My 80 year old mother and father made the “climb” both days we were there with little difficulty. Don’t pass this one up. Well worth the money.

The Lynwood Inn looks lovely. The decor is fresh and above 3-star quality. We booked two rooms, both on the main 1st level (not the ground floor) with two queen size beds each; one in the middle and the other an end unit. The end unit had a small balcony, the other did not. The Lynwood is in the heart of Baddeck (which is a small place) and walking distance to everything (liquor store and other restaurants).

That's about all I can say that's positive. For a new building, it is far too noisy. We could here the neighbours every time they went to the bathroom (in detail) and the outside doors slamming shook the whole building. Needless to say sleeping was an issue in both rooms.

One room had an iron and ironing board; the other a coffee maker - no idea why both didn't get each.

The cleaner(s) took some of our property. We complained and got nowhere. The management simply said that the she thought it was garbage and had thrown it out but from where it was in the room we find this very hard to believe. It would have cost them less than $10 to replace the items but they couldn't care less.

Their restaurant is medium quality/quantity and is expensive for what you get. We went when we first got there and never ventured back.

Overall it was a disappointment.
