We had a great time boating to amazing sites around the bay and photographing the bald eagles. Bruce Miller spoke to the fascinating history and tough life of his ancestors making a living fishing the bay.

Hi Neil:
It was a pleasure meeting you and Cathy.
So happy to hear you enjoyed the tour on the history of these long lost resettled communities and of our cod fishery of the past and present. Also happy to hear you enjoyed seeing and photographing bald eagles, beautiful photo's for sure. We normally see bald eagles on all tours.
Thank you for sharing your experience with Rugged Beauty Boat Tours with such a wonderful review.

Perhaps the highlight of our trip to Newfoundland. Bruce Miller toured us around the harbour area of New Bonaventure. Being born and raised in the area Bruce explained a lot of history and he is a natural story teller. We saw examples of the re settlement and original cod fishery. The open boat was wonderful and Bruce took us ashore to his cabin for tea. All four of us gave it 5/5. A flat out wonderful experience.

Joined some fellow travellers for this afternoon excursion with Bruce. The tour starts off on the dock in a fishing hut, Bruce talks about the early days in the fishing industry pre confederation, bringing in the fish haul, preparing the fish for transport or in the late a Fall salting them for longer storage.
The work was dangerous & required tremendous endurance. Bruce shared his memories & pictures as a child working for his Aunt Lizzie & Uncle Joe. He spoke about resettlement as it affected his family in this area & fishing communities. We learned a little about fishing in the area now.
We spent approx 2 hours in the boat touring around the Bay, he pointed out where relatives homes used to be, the school, the church. The scenery is beautiful (we also lucked out on weather with a gorgeous sunny warm day).
Bruce treated us to some tea & sweets @ his cabin overlooking the Bay.
Of interest in this bay there is seasonal operation bar “Joe’s” from a movie set The Grand Seduction, visit Joe’s bar after the tour.
The tour is not inexpensive but we both felt it was worth the fee. Bruce we thoroughly enjoyed your tour & highly recommend this experience.

Bruce provided my wife and me with a personally guided tour. Not only did he take us to various communities that are no longer inhabited, he provided us with a real life perspectives on the details of the resettlements, the impact to the families, and what’s transpired since.

Since cod fishing was the main source of income for many, he also detailed: the process of salting fish and the fishing industry pre & post 1992 with the closing of the fisheries. He uses his existing “room” to describe the entire process - wet and dry - and then you you hit the water.

Bruce is a local fisherman, carpenter, hunter and straight talking man that was born in a community and then relocated as part of resettlement. He uses pictures, stories and real life experiences to paint a very real picture of the life of a local dating back well beyond his years. We went to 3 communities, including Ireland’s Eyes, and the stories and photos of a time past are exciting to learn about.

Bruce also provides a raw honesty that you don’t always get in life. He points out the good, bad and ugly about many issues. He also talked about life in New Bonaventure in Trinity Bay and the local communities. There is much to be learned from Bruce and how a simplistic way of life was interrupted by unfortunate circumstances.

Bruce also took us to his family cabin for tea and that was also a treat.

I highly recommend the trip. Even though whales and icebergs are exciting to see, perspectives and stories like his won’t be around forever.

It was a pleasure meeting you and so happy to hear that you enjoyed and got so much out of our tour. These long lost resettled communities and the past and present of our cod fishery is my families life experiences that I have great passion for. It was indeed a simple way of life, a story like no other and one I feel need to be told and heard. The stop over at the cabin always adds warmth to the end of the tour.

Bruce is a wealth of knowledge...both first hand and through family stories. He is a fabulous guide, makes everyone feel welcome and safe on his tour. He knows his water, his land and the wildlife. We saw many Eagles! He even took the group to his family cabin in the cove to freshen up and a cup of tea.
Absolutely delightful!

So happy to hear you enjoyed the tour on the history of these long lost resettled communities and on the cod fishery of the past and present but most importantly that you felt safe on the boat tour. I grew up on the water and the land of this rugged beauty shoreline and have great passion for these places and our fishery and wildlife.

If you are looking for a true Newfoundland experience and don't mind a bit of salt spray and waves you must try this. It was a great day...lots of Newfoundland history with authentic stories with great explanations of fishing and small settlements. If you want to try cod jigging make sure you mention it up front and take the afternoon tour so he can go overtime. We caught our limit in half an hour and still had the benefit of the whole tour. Fishing only from fri-mon in season. He cleaned all our fish and ensured all had a great day! A must if you are in the area.

Cod fishing is not part of our daily tours so it was indeed a bonus to cod fish the day of your tour.

There is not much more I can say about Bruce and Rugged Beauty Boat Tours that hasn't already been said here, but what an incredible experience. Learning about resettlement, cod fishing, and the moratorium through Bruce's family stories will probably be the best part of our ongoing trip across Newfoundland. Make sure you make it a part of yours!

My wife and I recently took this "tour" during our recent visit and road trip across Newfoundland. We are from Virginia and lived in Newfoundland for about eight months in 1969. There is not much I can add to the excellent ratings Bruce's tour has consistently received, They're true. "Boat Tour" simply doesn't describe this "Thing to Do". I can't think of a simple descriptor. Maybe a unique "event" or "experience" come closer. Or maybe just: "Hey man, this is something you gotta do"!

Within the past month myself along with five seniors from Ontario decided to go to Newfoundland and one of our excursions was the Rugged Beauty Boat Tour with Bruce Miller. I'm from Newfoundland and all of us learned so much about the history and culture of Newfoundland. The whale and puffin tours are really a lot of fun - BUT - if you are interested in Newfoundland's story you have to go on this tour. From beginning to end this tour is informative and interesting. We enjoyed it and all said that it was one of the best excursions on our fabulous trip to Newfoundland. A truly must experience! Highly recommended to all whether you hail from Newfoundland or are visiting.
