Owner description: Filled with renditions of popular Newfoundland and Labrador songs and tunes, sprinkled with one-liners and wit and occasional display of culture, this group of five has become one of the most widely-attended acts in the whole province. Almost by accident, and practically overnight, the ANCHORS AWEIGH band has found its way onto the list of "things-to-do" for local residents and visitors alike.

I had the privilege of seeing this band perform at the Ocean View Hotel on June 12, 2012. Their song selections and stage presence has the audience going from tears of melancoly to tears of laughter every five minutes or so.

The band consists of 5 musicians ( a guitarist, an electric organist, a drummer , an accordian player and a singer). The show sort of centres around the singer and the accordian player ( cross dresser/comedian). Their range is from pop to classic Newfoundlard folk lore and the "STORIES" are both sad and hillarious.

The organist speaks several languages and gets ample crowd participation. The Accordian player is a real clown ( he has a face and smile that makes you laugh without uttering a word). The show costs $25/person ( I believe) and is sold out rapidly....LOCALS CAN BUY A $60 SEASON PASS). The Oceanview Hotel hosts this party in their main floor pub and serves meals before showtime at 8pm.

I have been to dinner theatre and musical/variety shows across Canada/USA and parts of Europe....This is a class act and packed with Newfoundland/Canadian culture/songs/writers and history that should not be missed. These guys sing well, interact on a very personal basis and are genuinely funny when talking about themselves and Canadians in general.

YOU WILL LOVE THIS GROUP... PS: REMEMBER "THE RHUBARB" ha/ha

You can't get the feel of Newfoundland without soaking in the music, and Anchors Aweigh does a great job with providing the feeling and the song of hardworking seafaring folk.

The best entertainment going. Very funny and the music was great. Well worth the cover charge. Got to love the Newfoundland humour.
