We drove to the parking lot on the highway, then hiked a very well-kept trail for about 30 mins. to the office/restaurant/dock. We were unfortunate to pick a day with high winds, so that our boat rolled frequently on our way to the fjord. Once we got between the cliffs, the ride was much smoother and we saw some spectacular scenery.

We booked the Bonne Bay tour at Bontours. We were only in the area for two days, and had planned the first day around this. At the hotel (Oceanview) where you can book Bontours, the clerk told us we could grab something to eat for lunch at their pub on the dock. We headed there on that assumption. When we arrived, we asked about different items on their menu, only to be told they had carrot cake only. We were going on a two-hour boat ride, so we did need something to eat for lunch. The only restaurant to eat in the small place was closed, so we were out of luck. We went into the store to buy a few bags of chips so we wouldn't be hungry when one of the locals told us to go to the cottage hospital where there was a cafeteria just up the street. Thanks to her we were able to have soup and sandwiches just up the street.

When we got back to the Bontour pub, there were 9 of us waiting to go out on the tour. A person ordered wings and was able to get them......and I wondered why were we told they only had carrot cake?!?!?!

After all of the waiting and rushing around for something to eat, the staff person told us they had a minimum of 10 and would probably not go out. When the boat came back from a tour (for a bus tour group that held 54 people), we were told that they had trouble with the rudder/steering and it couldn't go out. Funny enough, it was right back on schedule the day after. We later spoke to someone on that same tour who said they didn't experience any trouble at all and the ride was very smooth. We had wasted most of one of the only two days we had in the area. At no time were we previously told that they require a minimum of people. Shameful.

We headed out on the Western Brook Pond tour arranged by Bon Tours. It was a 30min drive from Rocky Harbour and the parking lot was right along the road. From the parking lot, it was a nice 45min walk on mostly boarded walks over marshy bogs, to the docks where the boat tour started. Originally a fjord, the Western Brook is now a freshwater pond after being cut off from the oceans several millennia ago and all sea water being flushed out to be replaced by fresh water. The views of the cliffs with traces of rock slides and tiny waterfalls cascading downhill were quite spectacular. However, as with most boat tours, it began to get tedious and the hour ride back was quite tiring. The 45min walk back to the parking lot at the end of the tour was not too bad.

Western Brook Pond itself is incredible (5/5). It was an easy walk out on a wooden boardwalk, about 3km each way through a striking landscape. The history and geology is fascinating; unfortunately, the narrator on our BonTours boat tour (3/5) didn't really tell us anything too interesting about it. For $60 per person, it would be really great to have a geologist on board who could talk about what it means that this is one of a few places on earth where the earth's mantle is visible, and what that tells us. There are reasons this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's not because of the face shapes in the rock that the guides were pointing out to us.

I think BonTours may have a monopoly on tours here, so it's still worth doing, but BonTours, if you're reading this:
1. Your tours would be MUCH improved by a focus on the geology of the area, which is part of what makes this place special.
2. It would be nice if your tour operators didn't go ripping along the path so quickly on their ATV; we found FOUR squashed frogs along the trail in the ATV tracks, and saw only one live one.
3. People were packed so tightly into our tour boat that there wasn't enough room for everyone to sit down, which you might want to tell people beforehand in case standing on a moving boat for two hours is an issue for anyone.

This was an expensive 2 hour boat ride....
My sister & her son missed out because they drove there & no one was around to tell them to take the path nor was there information or directions!! And when we took the route we weren't sure we were going in the right direction. We knew about the Fjords cause the people at the B&B told us what to do & reserved seats for us. They would have more people if they had better signage!!

Oh bring a rain jacket with a hood, or wear a hat & DON'T sit at the back of the boat ... U will get wet!!!
