We took the Western Brook Pond boat tour that is a 2 hour round-trip ride through the fjords, spectacular scenery, and well worth the $60 per person. The boat was fairly large (around 60 people) and 2 boats left every departure time. A bit choppy on the day we went, so may not be good for those who are easily seasick, and also was a bit cool on the deck, despite going on an August afternoon.
One important note is that the boats do book up quickly so I would recommend calling ahead to reserve a spot and avoid disappointment. Make sure to give yourself enough time before departure; there is a hike into the dock that takes around 45 mins to 1 hour, easy terrain but still a fairly long walk. At the dock there is a small canteen with bathrooms, as well as coffee and some snacks (pineapple Crush seems to be only in Nfld and worth trying!) As for the scenery check google images but it is beautiful, hard to capture in pictures or to explain in a review.

This is a service review of the Western Brook Pond tour operator, BonTours, and is not intended as a commentary on either the boat ride itself or Western Brook Pond, as I am sure it is as spectacular as other reviewers have said.

I first contacted BonTours in January of this year about a late May tour. I was told that it was too early to look into the future at that point and to email back at a later date. I tried again twice over the next couple of months and was told pretty much the same thing, which now was when I landed in Newfoundland to give them a call to arrange. My prime date was May 29th, which was later than their starting date in 2011, but they still would not commit to that date. My backup date was June 1st, which would take some rearranging to make but was not impossible. Finally, just before leaving home to fly to NL (5/14/12), I was told that the confirmed first date for tours was June 1st and so I made a reservation for that date.

I arrived in the area on May 29th, which was a gorgeous day, warm and clear and so I toured Gros Morne park and visited many of the key sights in the area. I even thought at the time that it would have been a wonderful day for a boat ride and how BonTours was really missing out on today. Little did I know...

Two nights later, I was staying at a bed and breakfast in L'Anse aux Meadows when I met a Dutch couple that had been at a restaurant I was at 2 nights earlier. I got to talking with them and told them I was going to take the Western Brook Pond tour the next morning. Their answer, "Oh, we took that trip the afternoon before we saw you!"

No words can convey my thoughts at that moment.

I had worked on this for 5 months, kept in tight contact and even expressed to them on two occasions to please contact me if they anticipated going any earlier than June 1st, even AFTER booking my reservation!

Well, you can probably imagine what happened next. The weather was cold, foggy and with off and on showers with the ceilings at about 200-300 feet. It was great fishing weather, but to pay $69 per person to see the 2,000 foot cliffs above you, it pretty much sucked. I got to the dropoff point and called BonTours to cancel my reservation due to the inclemency, and I was told that they would be glad to move my reservation to another date. When I said that this was my last time in the area, the phone was slammed down in my ear.

A fitting end to a horrible experience with a completely uncommunicative and unprofessional organization...I'll send them a postcard from a boat ride in a Norwegian fjord...
