Gros Morne Suites

We stayed in October for 4 nights. We were in suite 6 which directly faces the ocean on the upper level. It was a 2 bedroom place. There were no other visitors while we were there as it was pretty much out of season. The place was perfectly set up. It was also great to have laundry facilities available. I don't know about the noise factor with no one there however if someone below may hear from up above because its hardwood floors. We were very pleased with our stay.

We spent 5 nights at Gros Morne Suites. We were three adults in one of the two bedroom suites. Although we didn't directly face the ocean, we could still see it very well. The Suites weren't as close to the ocean as I thought the pictures showed, but never the less, the location was fine. The apartment is very modern and very clean. The balcony is somewhat small and with the barbecue, really is only suitable for two people to sit out there at any one time. Also, we felt that more comfortable seating could be added to the apartment - there was really only one couch plus 5 kitchen type chairs for seating. The kitchen was minimally stocked with utensils, pots, and dishes (there weren't four full sets of dishes or glasses) but had we asked, I am sure the owners would have provided more - we just didn't bother to check.

Room Tip: I think rooms 5 and 6 directly face the ocean.

We spent three nights at Gros Morne Suites. Our "apartment" was facing the ocean and was absolutely great! They sent us plenty of information when we booked our reservation and we really based our time around those things. Had a great visit to Grose Morne National Park. Our two bedroom unit seemed to have a well equipped kitchen although we only used it for coffee and preparing snacks. It is very close to Earle's which is a good place to eat. We had an upstairs unit but tried to be quiet based on previous reviews.

Room Tip: Get a front room with a view of the ocean!

We stayed at Gros Morne Suites for three nights at the end of a trip to Newfoundland. We had mainly stayed at B&B's, and loved the experience, but wanted a place where we can cook our own meals and kick back. The two-bedroom unit where we stayed was well-equipped, modern, clean and comfortable. Gros Morne Suites is located in a quiet area, away from the commercial part of Rocky Harbour. There is a laundry on site. Overall, the place met our needs perfectly. Any negatives? Well, as noted by others, sound travels between units. Also the "ocean view" was a bit of a disappointment, as there was a cemetery and some dockyard buildings in the foreground.

Gros Morne Suites are a wonderful place to stay to explore the area. The rooms are spacious and modern. When you book, they send you a confirmation as well as an extensive list of things to do in the area. There are 8 units in the 2 buildings including a small laudromat.
Although they are at the south end of town, they are walking distance (less than 5 minutes) to the fish market, a grocery store (Endicott's) and a great bakery and restaurant (Earle's). Try Earle's Turtle Cheesecake Squares. There is also a short trail to the Salmon Point lookout that runs by the buildings.

That being said, we have 2 reservations about GM Suites.
The first is that if you stay on the ground floor, you will hear people upstairs. In suite 5, the people above were trying their best to move gently but the floors are very creaky as they were heavier set people. It won't bother you that much during the day but you will definitely wake early if the upstairs neighbours wake before you. It's definitely worth climbing the stairs if you want to sleep in or turn in early. There should be signs or verbal instructions to remind people staying on the second floor that they might be disturbing the people downstairs. Also, the sound proofing between floors is very limited as we had to wear earplugs because of the gentleman's (I assume) snoring was loud enough to keep us awake.
Secondly, there 8 units in all and some have views that are much better than others. In the older building (nearer the street), the view of the water is limited and overlooks some less than prime real estate. In the two units on the street, the only view is from the balcony. At most other places we have stayed at, these suites would be at a slightly discounted rate. We had to stay in 2 suites because of late booking and the one facing the street was certainly not as enjoyable. See rooms tips for a ranking of the rooms.

Having stayed in both buildings, you can see some of the wear in the older building (suites 1 to 4) and some equipment difference. For example, the older building did not have a lobster 'cracker' while the newer one did. Unfortunately, we had lobster while staying in the older suite. The BBQ in suite 5 was in better shape than in #4. Small things that we would not have noticed had we not changed suites during our stay.

All in all, it was a great stay it's just that the neighbours can be a factor in how much you can enjoy your time here.

Room Tip: Stay upstairs and be considerate to your downstairs neighbours. Unit 6 is by far the best choice. Un...

My wife and I stayed here for four nights. We had a one bedroom unit on the ground floor. It was large and with plenty of space. The kitchen had all of the essentials, but you may want to bring your own spices if you plan to stay a while. The whole place was very clean.

The location can't be beat. Beautiful view, and close to the fresh fish store - do not miss it!

My rating of four instead of five is based on what appears to be a structural problem with the premises. The ceiling (hence the floor to the unit above) is wood. It transmits every sound. The unit above us was a two bedroom, and there was a couple with a young child. They were not noisy, but you could literally hear every footstep or dropped object. As a result, you could be woken up in the middle of the night if someone upstairs decided to go the bathroom or flushed the toilet. If you plan to go, suggest you get an upstairs unit - we certainly would.

Room Tip: Get an upstairs unit

The two buildings are quite new and are very nicely furnished and finished. At the time of our stay, we found that the two-bedroom suite was not adequately equipped for four adults. However the owner has promised to act on our suggestions of more towel racks and some shelves in the spacious bathroom; coat hooks, mirrors and a stool or chair in each bedroom and more comfortable seating in the living area. Although the use of energy-saving fluorescent lighting is commendable some areas needed better lighting so the owner has offered to provide more lamps. As the owners very quickly responded to our request for an additional chair and extra towels, I am basing this review on the assumption that they will also follow through on their offer to make the above improvements. The units are located almost at the end of the road in Rocky Harbour so are very quiet and peaceful, are within walking distance of a fresh fish market (put in your request for lobster the day before!) and within a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the bays (very nice at sunset). Laundry facilities are located in one of the buildings, are clean and reasonably priced. Internet service was very good.
