We arrived at L'Anse aux Meadows in time to take a guided tour with an extremely knowledgeable interpreter, Clayton Colbourne, he was both amazing and passionate! Character actors inside the Viking hut were incredible! We spent almost 4 hours at the site learning and speaking with the wonderful Parks Canada team!

Start your trip to the area with a tour of viking artifacts and replicas found in the centre. There is also a 15 minute video that they will put on for you if not already runny. It is an easy walk down to the viking hut that is made of compressed sod and is truly amazing. As you enter the hut there are people dressed in viking dress and are very interesting to talk with. When we were there they had a fire going and that was appreciated because it was soooo cold outside. There are also areas you can see where they have found homes that belonged to the vikings. I think the federal parks has done a fantastic job with the creation of this park. Do remember that it is a federal park so you need to either have a parks pass and pay an entrance fee, have the discovery pass or pay full price. NL has so many federal parks and sites that we purchased the discovery pass prior to coming.

I have read reviews that were disappointed and described L'Anse Aux Meadows and just mounds of dirt. Well, all I can say is that these reviewers have no soul. Standing where Viking houses stood a millennia ago, with the fog in the harbor and the wind biting around our ears, we could almost see Leif Erikson sailing into the bay. A truly amazing and spiritual place

To fully appreciate L'Anse aux Meadows one needs to feel somewhat like a Viking. Ice bergs in the bay, mist and moderate cold rain, a northwest wind off the ice pack and therein lies to richness of the Viking experience at L'Anse aux Meadows. Wear appropriate gear--boots, hats, jackets and then enjoy the absolute uniqueness of the site. Of course, it helps that the recreated Viking building has some delightful almost authentic Vikings. Ask them about how the Gods gave them fire; or, about the Pole of Scorn; or about how your ship grounded in the parking lot. Of course you can also warm up inside the building. Great staff at the Centre and fabulously enjoyable characters in their Viking garb. Loved the experience and was awed by the historical significance of the site.

I loved the interaction with the people who recreated the time period here. They were all very knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. It was quite a walk along the trail to the site but shouldn't be a problem for most.
