Me and my 12 yr old daughter arrived in Newfoundland in mid May after months of planning and after seeing the inspiring and very convincing commercials luring us there. Our goal was to see Icebergs, moose, and the Viking Trail including L'Anse Aux Meadows. After a couple rainy days in Twillingate and no icebergs, we made our way up to St. Anthony's...approximately an 8 hr drive. We drove into Gros Morne National Park and stayed one night in Rocky Harbour then made our way the next morning on the 4 hour drive to the Northern part of The Rock...
To keep this short, we arrived late in the day and arrived at our ultimate destination...much to our disappointment, we arrived to an empty parking lot and a sign reading "Park opens June 1st"...this was May 16th! The disappointment on my daughters face was heartbreaking...We looked around but it was getting dark and we headed back to our hotel...The next day we got up and decided to head back that way because we saw some small Icebergs and were on the hunt for more of the floating ice palaces...We arrived at about 2PM and there was one other car there...another family who was there for the same reason...we approached the doors and saw a worker inside...we knocked on the doors and she came and opened them up...she invited us in, even though it wasnt officially opened yet...she let us browse around and even put on the 15 min video explaining the historic significance of the site and invited us to go out and explore the lands...It was very informative and we loved exploring this site together imagining what it was like over 1,110 years ago...to finish off the tour we saw 2 mmoose calfs and an iceberg off in the distance...it was a completely perfect experience that we will remember as a highlight of our trip to Newfoundland!

We visited this site on a cold, windy, rainy day in August. There was a short walk from the parking lot to the visitor's center where there was an excellent film, some displays, and a book store. We started the tour but opted not to continue with the it because of the terrible weather. We went directly to the sod huts rather than walk around the site with the tour. It was about a 5 to 10 minute walk to go directly to the huts. There were some small huts that were not manned. We spent more than an hour in the main sod hut totally engrossed in the stories that the "admiral" and the "blacksmith" told.

We learned a great deal about the Vikings and Norsemen. We did buy one book in the bookstore, but wished there had been a bigger selection of books on the Vikings and Norsemen.
I also would have liked to have found a pictorial book of the site.

Make sure to take the guided tours (every 45 min) Our guide was absolutely knowledgeable about so many aspects of the place, the history and the people. It's a shame that the actual sites were covered with sod in order to preserve them, but understandable. The reconstructed areas are a good representation of what they would have been as I think they took great pains to be very accurate in their depiction of life as a Norseman.

If you can catch the "Saga's and Shadows" presentation, do so!! It was well worth it to hear the stories of the odysseys, as well as stories of Thor.

Plan to spend 3 or 4 hours at the site Including the visitors centre. Also, we did the 2km costal hike, which was great, some parts were a little steep but the views were amazing.

Fascinating Viking adventure. Make sure you view the short video first (15 minutes) and take advantage of the guided tour. Guide very knowledgable (Dale) and friendly making sure all could hear her and all questions were addresses. Definitely well worth a visit.

We enjoyed the afternoon viewing the site and listening to the re-enactors. We did not go with a guide but we did watch the video which I would recommend. We then went to the Norseman site across the highway. i would recommend that you do both ad they offer different perspectives. Both were very good! Both will fit in in a day
