“Worth the trip”

We were glad that we took the tour. The guide was Clayton, a local very knowledgeable storyteller. The interpreters in the village buildings were excellent and made the place feel alive.

“Incredible vista and journey back in time”
Reviewed September 27, 2012

Once you drive up the hill, your vision embraces this spectacular bay, which enticed and brought so many fishermen of different origins to this well stoked fishing area so many centuries ago. The Vikings left their imprints and Parks Canada has made a phenomenal effort to make this site a most remarkable one. The displays are most informative, and a lot of them are interactive. The setting in itself is worth the drivel The walk to the actual village itself is well designed and makes the access to the house and authentic setting very easy to walk to even if you have a mobility problem.,

“The highlight of our trip”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

This was the reason why we came to Newfoundland. My husband is a Saga freak and we have visited all the important Viking sites in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, greenland and Faroe Islands. This was the highlight of our trip. Had an excellent guide, a native of L'Anse aux Meadows, who shared his knowledge with us. We enjoyed seeing the reconstructed viking houses that looked similar to the one we saw in Brattahlid, Greenland. The "Viking" in the house was entertaining and to our surprise was singing the same evening in a nearby restaurant!

“A step back in time.”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

This is a not to be missed experience on your trip to Newfoundland and Labrador. We were lucky enough to have Clayton as our guide. Clayton, while looking very "Norse", is a born and bred Newfoundlander, and was on hand as a youngster when the archeological digs were first made. His personal experiences with the digs is an invaluable resource. His mother even baked bread for the Ingstad's when they were at the site doing the excavations!! The site itself is preserved for future excavations, but you can see the indentations where the original dwellings were located, and in the visitors' center, you can see the actual artifacts that were found on the site. The explanatory panels and the video are very informative. Allow yourself at least two hours to take in the site. If the day is nice, there are also some hikes that will enable you to explore the countryside. Following the archeological tour, you have the opportunity to visit the reconstructed Norse site and visit with the re-enactors. On our visit, we were lucky enough to meet Bjorn, and his daughter. Bjorn, in real life, Wade Hillier, is also a native of the area. Wade was very informative and entertaining about the way of life of the Norse, and also about many other topics of interest to us, such as the fishing industry, local gardens, and hunting season, which had started the day we arrived!! Wade also sings in the evenings at the Norseman restaurant. (I can also recommend his CD!!) We could easily have spent the whole day here, but hunger forced us to move along.

“Wonderful”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

Great Hiking for the inexperienced hiker. Well marked, paths, boardwalks, shoreline areas. Saw a number of moose in the fields. The film and the interpreters were able to provide a good background of the history of the Viking visits to the area.
They were able to make history come alive.
